JAMMU: The Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu today organized Gender Sensitization workshop for the Students and scholars of the Department of Botany, University of Jammu. Prof. Savita Nayyar, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies, was the resource person. She spoke on the theme: “Gender Sensitization and Gender Equality: An overview”.
Through her presentation she explained the concept of Sex and Gender and further elaborated on the concept of different Gender Roles and Stereotypes. She also explained the concept of Patriarchy and said how patriarchy leads to various issues related to women’s issues like: Domestic Violence, Harassment, Dowry Deaths, etc. While interacting with the participants, she also explained the different forms of violence and harassment that women face in their day-to-day life.
Prof. Susheel Verma, Head, Department of Botany, spoke about the importance of such workshop and applauded the efforts of the Centre. While explaining the importance of this workshop, he also shared his personal experiences to make the participants understand the importance of gender socialisation and said how we can bring change in the patriarchal mindset with a small gesture of work sharing at home.
Dr. Saranjit Kaur, faculty, Centre for Women’s Studies explained the workings of the Centre. Further, she described the importance of conducting such workshops and threw light on the efforts taken by the Centre to create gender awareness among on-campus students and scholars of the University. Prof. Namrata Sharma, Faculty, Department of Botany, also shared her personal experiences.
Ms. Kunzang Angmo conducted the program and Dr. Saranjit Kaur presented the formal vote of thanks. Dr. Skarma Nonzom, faculty, Department of Botany coordinated the program. A large number of students, scholars and faculty members from the Department of Botany very enthusiastically participated in the workshop. Among others who were present were Prof. Veenu Kaul, Dr. Geeta, Associate Professor and Dr. Skarma Nonzom.
