JAMMU: The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Jammu commenced its three-day orientation program for the fourth batch of the Integrated Program in Management (IPM) on August 22, 2024, at Mandapam Auditorium at Jagti Campus. The event marked the beginning of a new journey for the fourth batch, with a series of insightful sessions, and engaging activities lined up to help students settle into their new environment. On the previous day, the parents had the opportunity to engage directly with Prof. B.S. Sahay, Director, IIM Jammu. The session featured healthy and interactive discussions between the parents and IIM Jammu fraternity.
The first day of the program commenced on a refreshing note with a session titled "Maximize Happiness and Mindfulness," led by Mr. Sahil Mehra, a renowned Yoga Guru. This early morning session, held at the Canal Road Campus, set a positive tone for the day, emphasizing the importance of mental and physical well-being as students embark on their journey at IIM Jammu. Following this, the students were given a comprehensive tour of the Jagti Campus, familiarizing themselves with the state-of-the-art facilities that will support their academic and extracurricular activities throughout their time at the institute.
Prof. B.S. Sahay, Director, IIM Jammu, in his welcome address, congratulated the students and emphasized the importance of managing pressure, noting that the IIM curriculum is designed to challenge and develop their expertise. He urged them to focus on the first three years, which are crucial for building a strong foundation through a blend of theoretical learning and practical application.
He highlighted the need for students to apply their minds, avoid distractions, and excel in their studies. He also pointed out the difficulty of gaining admission to prestigious institutions like IIT and IIM, stressing the importance of being well-prepared for classes and prioritizing academics, as results are evaluated every semester. He gave an overview into the various clubs and committees at IIM Jammu, explaining that the institute's vision is to create leaders and entrepreneurs who will be job creators, not job seekers.
He emphasized on the two Centres of Excellence at IIM Jammu: the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the Centre for Small Business Development Units, which empower students to impact the future of India and the world. Encouraging the students to dream big, he stated that nothing is impossible if they dedicate their time and life to achieving excellence and the nation.
He urged them to learn to ask questions, strive to learn something new, and strive for improvement. He expressed optimism about India's future, predicting that the country will soon become the third-largest economy and regain its status as a "Vishwaguru" (world leader). He encouraged students to celebrate every moment of their lives, build strong networks, and dedicate themselves to the nation, aligning with the vision of Shri Narendra Modi, the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India. By 2047, the goal is for India to become a developed nation and reclaim its status as a global leader
Prof. Jabir Ali, Dean Academics, welcomed the young minds to IIM Jammu, emphasizing the opportunity to shape their lives in a unique educational setting. Highlighting the need for active engagement and hard work, he urged students to be well-prepared for their sessions and participate in diverse programs to achieve their goals and positively impact others.
Dr. Rashmi Ranjan Parida, Chairperson (Admissions), provided an insightful presentation on the diverse student profiles, highlighting the rich mix of talents and backgrounds that define the new batch.
Dr. Ashish Kumar, Chairperson, IPM, highlighted that the five-year Integrated Program in Management (IPM) aligns with NEP 2020, featuring an entry and exit policy. The curriculum integrates diverse courses from science and engineering, using case-based learning to enhance critical thinking. He encouraged students to learn beyond the classroom, utilizing the various clubs and committees at IIM Jammu.
The formal proceedings began with an Inaugural Program that featured traditional lighting of the lamp, symbolizing the beginning of a new chapter. The Saraswati Vandana, performed by the 2nd-year IPM students, added a spiritual and cultural touch to the event. The inaugural session concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Niti Shekhar, Co-chairperson (IPM), followed by the National Anthem, instilling a sense of pride and unity among the attendees.
The day continued with an insightful session on "Academic Rigor, Pedagogy, and Expectations" by Dr. Ashish Kumar, Chairperson, IPM, who emphasized the program's rigorous curriculum and urged students to transition from a school mindset to excel in their studies.
Mr. Arup Bhattacharya, Administrative Officer – Academics, then briefed students on "Academic Regulations and Discipline," highlighting the importance of understanding the institute's policies and cultivating a global mindset for success. Cmdr Kesavan Baskkaran (R), CAO, addressed "Administrative Support, Discipline, and Security," ensuring students are aware of the support systems in place at IIM Jammu.
Dr. V. Rajkumar, Chairperson, Student Affairs, IIM Jammu and Dr. Ashish Kumar, Chairperson, IPM, IIM Jammu provided insights into "Student Life at IIM Jammu," emphasizing the vibrant campus culture and opportunities beyond academics. Dr. Jai Kamal, Chairperson, Anti-Ragging, reaffirmed IIM Jammu's commitment to a ragging-free campus. The day further progressed with sessions on "International Accreditation & Ranking" by Dr. V. Raj Kumar, Chairperson, Accreditation, IIM Jammu and a session on "Social and Corporate Internships" by Dr. Rashmi Ranjan Parida, Chairperson, Placements, IIM Jammu and Mr. Atanu Dutta, IIM Jammu underscoring the importance of internships and global standing.They also provided an overview into the committees working under the placement domain.
Day One culminated with an engaging interaction with the Council, Committee, and Club Members, giving students a valuable opportunity to connect with the various student bodies and learn about the vibrant extracurricular landscape at IIM Jammu. IIM Jammu successfully concluded the orientation program, laying a strong foundation for the new batch as they embark on their academic journey.
