SRINAGAR: In order to upgrade the Mental Health Care Services in peripheral hospitals, the Directorate of Health Services, Kashmir today started latest Ultra Brief Pulse & Brief Pulse Modified Electro Convulsive Therapy (mECT) procedures at District Hospital Pulwama.The procedure was done by a team of Doctors & Paramedical staff comprising of Dr. Majid Shafi (Consultant Psychiatry), Dr. Sheikh Naseer (Anesthetist), Mr. Naseer Ahmad Pandit (Theatre Technician) & Mr. Mushtaq Ahmad (Anesthesia Technician) under the able guidance of Dr. Abdul Rashid Para (Medical Superintendent, District Hospital Pulwama). The patient is a middle aged man in early 50’s suffering from major Depressive Disorder (Severe) & was not responding to Pharmacotherapy & Psychotherapy.  

District Hospital Pulwama thus becomes the first hospital after tertiary care hospitals to start such services at District level across state. mECT is treatment of choice for Severe & Resistant Depressive Disorders. It is also indicated in BPAD (Bipolar Affective Disorder), Catatonia & some Movement disorders. It is the safest procedure under General Anesthesia with least Morbidity & Mortality.  

Director Health Services, Kashmir Dr Saleem ur Rehman while congratulating the Pulwama District Mental Health Programme (DMHP) Team and Medical Superintendent of the Hospital for conducting such procedure, said that the department has been focussing keenly on upgrading the mental health care services  across all Districts under DMHP in a phase wise manner so that patients are benifitted at their doorsteps.He also thanked the HoD and the faculty of the Psychiatry Hospital, Srinagar in taking keen interest to train DMHP Team for the same. 

Pertinently, after successful completion of one year of DMHP, the following services were provided by Pulwama DMHP Team: OPD Patients - 13396 (OPD Services at DH Pulwama, SDH Pampore & Tral), Counselled Patients - 754, Starting of MBT (Multi Behavioral Therapy), Different Scales for Psychological Assessment, Counselling Sessions at Schools & Community-  27, PHC & CHC Visits for Sensitization about Mental Health - 51, Sensitization & training of Paramedical Staff & ASHA Workers in identification of Common Mental Disorders - 150, Training of Medical Officer & in Management of Common Mental Illnesses-54.
