DODA: District Administration Doda today hosted   one day workshop on Beti Bachao Beti Padhao under the theme “ Celebrate girl child, enable her education”. The workshop was a prelude to a massive awareness campaign being launched to create mass awareness about the need for improving sex ratio in the district. During the event held under the chairmanship of District Development Commissioner Bhawani Rakwal, the modalities were worked out for the proposed campaign.

 

Also present were ADC (District Nodal Officer) Pawan Parihar, DSWO (ADNO) Ashraf Khurwani, DPO Idress Lone, District officers, officials of social welfare deptt, representatives from private institutions, civil society were also present on the occasion. It was informed that the campaign aims at to improve the declining sex ratio at birth and highlight the need to address the issue of pre-birth and post-birth discrimination with girl child such as sex determination, less care in health and education etc.

 

The DC said that the BBBP is an excellent example of convergent coordinated action of Govt. of India and the states between Ministry of health, HRD and WCD. For successful implementation of the scheme, the DDC said there was a need to change the mindset of people and prevent gender based sex determination. He urged the participants to focus on survival and protection of a girl child by ensuring education and improved nutrition to them. It is a multi sectoral action which needs coordinated efforts from all the sector, he added.

 

He stressed upon the participants to aware the masses   to educate and convert girls into a career so to make them economically independent and less susceptible to domestic violence and abuse. ADC Doda (Nodal officer) said that the programme needs advocacy and strong Media campaign for awareness among general public. He stressed on training the girls in self defence to protect themselves against   violence.

 

He further suggested to place pamphlets, banners etc with the theme of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao at important places and locations in the district. Besides, he asked for training of Anganwari and Asha workers to spread awareness on importance of female child among the rural population.
