Unlike documentaries, these films often take creative liberties to dramatize events. By exploring more than just accomplishments, setbacks, and controversies, these movies offer a deeper look into the personalities behind them. That is why some biopics continue to generate buzz even years after their release.

Here is a curated list of five biopics, including those based on the Father of the Nation and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

Gandhi

This internationally acclaimed biographical drama chronicles key events in the life of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation. Ben Kingsley portrays the revered Indian leader in the film, which won eight Academy Awards in 1983, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for Kingsley. The British Film Institute ranked it as the 34th greatest English-language film of the 20th century, while the American Film Institute placed it 29th on its list of the most inspiring movies. 'Gandhi 'was directed by Richard Attenborough. The movie is available for streaming on Prime Video.

Sam Bahadur

‘Sam Bahadur’ is a biopic of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, the seventh Chief of the Army Staff of the Indian Army. Known for his bravery, Manekshaw played key roles in five wars and was the first Indian Army officer to be promoted to Field Marshal. Directed by Meghna Gulzar and produced by Ronnie Screwvala, the film features Vicky Kaushal in the lead role. The cast also includes Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra, Bobby Arora, Monuj Borkotoky and Dhanveer Singh. The movie is available for streaming on ZEE5.

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero

This biopic on one of India's most renowned freedom fighters, Subhas Chandra Bose, is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Shyam Benegal. The film presents Bose’s extraordinary yet complex life in a way that remains accessible to a wide audience while also being noted for its technical excellence. Sachin Khedekar delivers a stellar performance as Bose in the movie, which captures key moments from his eventful life. With music maestro A R Rahman composing the background score, the movie is produced by Raj Pius and Barbara von Wrangell.

Swatantrya Veer Savarkar

'Swatantrya Veer Savarkar,’ the directorial debut of actor Randeep Hooda, is a biopic based on the lawyer, activist and politician Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. Hooda also stars in the titular role and co-wrote the script with Utkarsh Naithani. Alongside Hooda, the film features major roles played by Ankita Lokhande, Amit Sial, R. Bhakti Klein, Apinderdeep Singh, Mark Bennington, David M Harrison, Russell G Banks, and Ed Robinson. Produced by Anand Pandit Motion Pictures, Legend Global Studio, and Legend Studios, the movie’s original score was composed by Mathias Duplessy and Sandesh Shandilya. ‘Swatantrya Veer Savarkar’ is available on ZEE5.

Shershaah

A tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of Kargil war hero Captain Vikram Batra, ‘Shershaah’ is directed by Vishnuvardhan. Sidharth Malhotra portrays Vikram and succeeds in memorializing one of India’s favourite war heroes. The film not only highlights his courage on the battlefield but also explores his deeply emotional relationship with Dimple Cheema.
