- Benia beats Amritpal in thrilling wrestling competition
JAGTI NAGROTA: Provincial President National Conference and MLA Nagrota Mr Devender Singh Rana on Friday appreciated the keen interest being evinced by youngsters in traditional wrestling known in common parlance as Dangal, saying the thrilling sport has gained impetus after making waves at the international level. “Wrestling has attained amazing and encouraging propositions over the years and the events being held across the Nagrota constituency are inspiring youth to take to the sport in large numbers”, Mr Rana said while speaking at prize giving function at Saya Village of Jagti area in Nagrota Assembly Constituency after the thrilling competition, witnessed by a large number of people from peripheries.
Benia of J&K Police was crowned the champion of the keen contest by defeating Amritpal from Amritsar who was declared as runner up. The Provincial President envisioned a great future for the sport, given the enthusiasm among the youth, notwithstanding the challenges being posed by several other popular sports. He said wrestling has its huge and specific fan following with lovers of the game passionately waiting for such events to take place at frequent intervals. He assured full support to organizers in holding such competitions and exuded confidence that the local youth will actively participate in wrestling.
“The enthusiasm among fans is equally reassuring and reflective of the fact that the game still holds big promise for talented youth”, he said and congratulated the competitors and organisers for making the event live and breath-taking by putting in their best in the competition. The MLA expressed his happiness over Nagrota becoming hub of sports and other activities, enabling youth to showcase their talent on larger canvass. He said holding of various events like Kabbadi and wrestling reflect the love for sports in the constituency. He hoped the sports persons to remain in the forefront to give fillip to sports in the Constituency so that talented ones find their due place in state and the national squads. “Given the commitment of youth, I am really optimistic that day to come soon”, he added.
