• Says Agriculture is backbone of our economy and efforts are on to strengthen it

BUDGAM: Deputy Commissioner (DC) Budgam, Athar Aamir Khan, today inaugurated a day-long Kisan Mela under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) 2026-27, organised by the Department of Agriculture Production at Sheikh-ul-Alam Hall, Budgam.

 The one- day Mela and Awareness Cum Workshop  was aimed at empowering farmers, promoting sustainable agriculture and creating awareness about various government initiatives for the farming community.

 Speaking on the occasion, the DC said that the agriculture is the backbone of the economy and sustained efforts are on to strengthen the sector. He stressed on ensuring maximum farmer outreach under government schemes and initiatives.

Describing adoption of latest and scientific technologies as imperative for progressive farming, the Deputy Commissioner asserted that farmers have access to modern technologies, scientific farming practices and government welfare schemes.

He directed all Agriculture and allied departments to remain in constant communication with farmers and ensure effective outreach through awareness and Information, Education and Communication (IEC) programmes at the, District, Block and panchayat levels.

The DC emphasised that farmers be made aware of the latest scientific farming techniques, modern agricultural technologies and flagship initiatives such as HADP, JKCIP and other farmer-centric schemes so that they can maximise productivity and improve their livelihoods.

Urging farmers to register under schemes, the Deputy Commissioner said, “all farmers of district Budgam should take maximum benefits under schemes for better yield and for their economic growth.”

He also inspected various stalls set up by the Agriculture and allied departments, showcasing agricultural products, modern farm machinery, innovative technologies, high-yield crop varieties and information on different government schemes and services available to farmers.

The Kisan Mela also featured a farmers’ workshop-cum-training programme, where experts from Agriculture and allied sectors interacted with farmers and provided practical guidance on improved cultivation practices, crop diversification, soil health management, integrated pest management, value addition and sustainable farming methods.

Speaking on the occasion, Additional District development commissioner Budgam, Vivek Agarwal encouraged the farming community to adopt modern agricultural practices and take full advantage of the schemes being implemented by the government.

Among others, CPO, Javed  Ahmad; Joint Director Extension, Mujtaba Yahyaa and other resources persons and experts from SKUAST-K, Agriculture and allied Sectors also interacted with farmers and spoke on different government initiatives, welfare schemes and financial assistance available for farmers.

On the occasion, Chief Agriculture Officer, Farzana Tabasum highlighted significant achievements under various flagship programmes, including HADP, JKCIP, MIDH and Natural Farming, while emphasizing the importance of scientific interventions, quality seed, crop diversification, mechanization and regular field-level extension services.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from a large number of farmers, representatives of Agriculture and allied departments, progressive farmers and other stakeholders from across the district.
