JAMMU: Asha Kiran Welfare Society (AKWS) organised a Vichar Goshti on “Nasha Mukti Abhiyan” at Perfect Foundation Public High School (10+2), Janipur Colony, Jammu, on 3rd October 2026. A total of 18 students from different classes of the school participated in the competition.

Mr. Vansh Gupta of Class 8th, Ms. Ashriti of Class 9th and Ms. Arpita of Class 10th secured 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions, respectively, as decided by the teachers’ committee constituted for the purpose. Consolation prizes were presented to all the participating students, while mementos were awarded to the students who secured the first three positions.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. J.P. Gupta, Chairman, Asha Kiran Welfare Society, highlighted that the main objective of organising the Goshti on this important subject was to protect the youth, particularly school and college students, from drug addiction through awareness campaigns. He stated that the Government of J&K has established drug de-addiction centres in every district, where affected youth are provided counselling and guidance to help them overcome addiction. He further stated that drug traffickers are being apprehended by the police and dealt with under the provisions of the NDPS Act. The Government is also extending counselling, moral and financial support for the rehabilitation of affected persons.

Dr. Gupta also spoke in detail about the harmful effects of consuming narcotic substances such as heroin, ganja, charas, etc. on the health of young people. He explained that drug abuse can lead to loss of appetite, slow breathing, impaired eyesight, unconsciousness, brain damage, loss of memory and, in severe cases, even death.

Mrs. Sheetal Manhas, Principal of the school, appreciated the efforts of Asha Kiran Welfare Society in organising the awareness programme for the students and thanked the Society members for choosing the school for such an important awareness initiative and administered a joint pledge to the students to stay away from harmful narcotic and intoxicating substances.

Ms. Priyanka Thakur, Vice Principal of the school and Stage Secretary, efficiently conducted the proceedings of the programme and coordinated the event.

Sh. Hari Chand Sharma (Joint Secretary), Sh. Vinod Kumar (Organising Secretary), Sh. S.N. Abrol (Cashier) and Sh. Sushil Sultan, Sh. Bodh Raj Sharma (Councillors) were also present on the occasion. The programme was attended by more than 20 teachers and around 250 students of the school.
