GANDERBAL: On “World Health Day-2026” observed under the theme- “Together with Health. Stand with Science.”, Department of Law, School of Legal Studies (SLS) in collaboration with the International Consumer Advocacy Group organised a one-day national webinar on “Food Safety and Healthcare Laws in India,” at Tulmulla campus here Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Farooq Ah Mir, Head and Dean SLS highlighted the rotten meat issue that shook the whole valley and pointed to various healthcare issues worldwide which are the outcomes of consuming adulterated food. He focused on how the Consumer protection legislations work simultaneously with FSSAI despite their overlapping nature to curb the issues surrounding food and health in the current legal framework, where there is a “regulatory vacuum of efficient legislation” that collectively deals with the issues of adulterated food and healthcare.

The keynote speaker Prof. (Dr.) Ranjit Singh, Vice-Chancellor Shobit University, Gangoh-Saharanpur, UP talked about how the rural population and low-income strata people have no idea what health and food standards are and how they have no inclination to what caveat emptor is and how they should be aware of their rights and also how they should check the labels before buying the food products.

Guest of Honour Mr Hilal Ahmad Mir, Assistant Commissioner, Food Safety Kashmir, Department of Drugs and Food Control Organisation highlighted the need for the consumer to check labels on products and also how the compliance mechanism works in the valley. He talked about the challenges that the department is facing on account of the large unorganised sector, lack of awareness, manpower shortage, delays in deciding cases, high cost compliance, inadequate labs, and most significantly less or almost no slaughterhouses in Kashmir.

The health expert and Guest of Honour Dr. Ramaya Jyoti, Deputy Medical Superintendent, Department of Hospital Administration, AIIMS Mangalgari, Andra Pradesh highlighted the need of robust healthcare laws and how the health degradation can be prevented on the primordial, primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary levels.

Guest of Honour, Mr Amarsandeep K., Proactive Consumer Activist from Karnataka talked about the rights and responsibilities of the consumers. He gave some insights on the expiry dates and lifespan of the food products.

The coordinators of the webinar were Dr. P.V.V.S. Murthy, Former Member of District Consumer Forum, Vijayawada, Founder of International Consumer Advocacy Group and Dr Jehirul Islam, Associate Professor, SLS CUKashmir. The webinar concluded with a question/answer session.
