In loving memory of Dr. Priya Ranjan: A mentor who treated me like family

SRINAGAR: The Department of Civil Engineering and Department of Mathematics at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar on Monday jointly organised a guest lecture on “Advances in Computational Fluid Dynamics: From Mesoscale Modelling to Real-World Engineering Applications” .

The lecture was delivered by Prof. Dhiraj V. Patil, Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Dharwad.  Director NIT Srinagar, Prof. Anurag Misra, attended the programme as the chief guest.

The lecture focused on emerging computational approaches for understanding and simulating complex fluid-flow phenomena and their applications in modern engineering. Key areas covered included mesoscale modelling, particle-based techniques such as the Lattice Boltzmann Method, the Discrete Element Method (DEM), thermal and multiphase fluid flows, non-Newtonian fluids, turbulence and high-speed flows.

The session highlighted the growing role of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in addressing complex engineering problems, developing predictive models and bridging the gap between theoretical modelling and practical applications. It also explored the interdisciplinary relevance of computational methods across civil, mechanical and aerospace engineering.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Misra appreciated the initiative and emphasised the importance of expert lectures and interdisciplinary engagement in strengthening research, technical learning and academic collaboration at the institute.

The programme provided faculty members, researchers and students an opportunity to learn about recent developments in computational modelling and numerical simulation, while encouraging knowledge exchange between the participating departments and the invited expert.

Prof. J. A. Bhat, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, and Dr. Zamrooda Jabeen, Head and Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics also attended the programme. Dr. Vivek, Assistant Professor (CED), and Dr. Atendra Kumar, Assistant Professor (Department of Mathematics), contributed to organising the event.

The programme concluded with an emphasis on fostering interdisciplinary research, strengthening computational capabilities and promoting the application of innovative numerical methods to real-world engineering challenges.

Your voice can reach the world: At JK Monitor, we firmly believe that every well-researched idea has the power to inspire change beyond geographical boundaries. We are delighted to share an encouraging message from one of our esteemed contributors, Dr. Rakesh Verma (J&K Forest Services). “His article, ‘When Trees Become Rights-Bearing Citizens: A Lesson from Canada for India’s Ecological Future,’ published on JK Monitor, received appreciation from La Compagnie des Papillons Bleus, the French non-profit organisation that founded and promotes the Universal Declaration of Tree Rights.”.  Read the message here
A Profound Loss: JK Monitor Mourns the Passing of Founding Chairman Dr. Priya Ranjan

We at JK Monitor are profoundly saddened by the sudden demise of our Founding Chairman, Dr. Priya Ranjan.IN LOVING MEMORY Dr Priya Ranjan

A brilliant mind who studied at Netarhat Residential School and graduated in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur before earning his PhD from the University of Maryland, Dr. Ranjan chose to return to India and dedicate his life to teaching, research and social good.

His pioneering work in networked systems, AI, robotics and biomedical applications—especially computer-vision tools for early detection of cancer and heart disease—reflected his deep belief that advanced technology must serve humanity.

For more than 15 years at JK Monitor, he remained a loyal friend, mentor and collaborator, marked by rare humility, intellectual integrity and quiet generosity. His passing leaves a void that cannot be filled. Priya, you will be deeply missed. Your life continues to remind us that knowledge finds its highest purpose in the service of others.
