  • Environmental awareness must be part of everyday learning: NLCO Chairman

SRINAGAR: Bilaliya Education Institute (BEI), Lal Bazar Srinagar, set a strong example of action-based environmental education by hosting a focused programme under the theme“One Admission One Tree”, linking every new admission with a clear responsibility to plant a tree and nurture it.

The programme stood out for its practical and result-oriented approach, where each student was made a stakeholder in environmental protection from the very beginning of their academic journey. A significant number of parents participated in the event, reinforcing the idea that meaningful change begins at home through collective responsibility.

The event commenced with a warm welcome address by Principal BEI, Nissar Ahmad, who also conducted the proceedings with effective anchoring. He highlighted the importance of integrating environmental responsibility into the core values of education and appreciated the active involvement of parents and students.

The concept of “One Admission One Tree”, originally introduced on March 8, 2025 by Dr. G. N. Itoo during his tenure as Director School Education Kashmir, was formally implemented at the institution with visible commitment and participation.

Former Director General Educatio Kashmirn and Director center for Good Governance and policy analysis IUST Kashmir Dr. G. N. Itoo, who attended the programme as Chief Guest, emphasized the importance of nurturing environmental consciousness from an early age. He stated that when children plant and care for trees from the nursery stage, they develop discipline, ownership and a lasting connection with nature. He also raised concerns about excessive screen exposure among children and urged parents to guide them towards meaningful and value-driven activities.

Chief Education Officer (CEO) Srinagar, Ghulam Mohiudin, in his address, underlined the need for responsibility and accountability in today’s changing social landscape. He urged both parents and educators to ensure that moral values are preserved alongside modern education.

BEI and NLCO Chairman, Manzoor Ahmad Wangnoo, reiterated that academic excellence alone is not sufficient. He stressed that environmental awareness must become an integral part of everyday learning. “Such initiatives are essential in shaping responsible citizens who understand their duty towards protecting natural resources and preserving ecological balance,” he said.

Noted environmentalist Peerzada Fayyaz Ahmad, while addressing the gathering, highlighted the urgent need to protect the environment through community-driven efforts. He lauded the sustained work and dedication of NLCO Chairman Manzoor Ahmad Wangnoo Sahab, stating that his consistent efforts in environmental conservation have set a benchmark for institutions and society alike. “Environmental protection is not a choice but a responsibility. Initiatives like this ensure that awareness translates into action at the grassroots level,” he remarked.

A key highlight of the programme was its focus on direct action. Saplings were distributed among the parents of newly admitted students, who were encouraged to plant them at their homes along with their children. The institution also introduced a monitoring mechanism, requesting parents to share geo-tagged photographs to track the growth of plants and ensure accountability.

The programme delivered a clear and impactful message small actions, when multiplied, create lasting change. With every new admission now contributing to plantation, the initiative aims to steadily strengthen environmental sustainability.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by student Sheikh Mohammad Hanan, who expressed gratitude to the distinguished guests, parents, and participants for making the programme meaningful and outcome-driven.
