JAMMU: Senior Congress leader, AICC Member and Bharat Yatri Shamsher Chand today emphasized the transformative role of sports in shaping the future of youth and strengthening the foundations of nation-building, particularly in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

Addressing a gathering of youth and sports enthusiasts, Shamsher Chand highlighted that sports not only promote physical fitness but also instill discipline, teamwork, leadership and a spirit of healthy competition among young people. “In a region like J&K, where the youth possess immense potential, sports can act as a powerful tool to channel their energy in a positive direction and steer them away from social challenges,” he said.

He stressed that promoting sports culture in the region is essential for fostering unity, confidence and national integration. “Sports have the ability to bridge divides and bring communities together. It builds character and creates responsible citizens who contribute meaningfully to society and the nation,” he added.

Shamsher Chand called upon the J&K Government to take concrete steps for strengthening sports infrastructure at the grassroots level. He demanded the establishment of modern stadiums, indoor sports complexes and training academies in rural as well as urban areas to ensure equal opportunities for all aspiring athletes. He also urged the authorities to introduce structured sports programs in schools and colleges, with trained coaches and adequate facilities.

Highlighting the need for institutional support, he sought enhanced financial assistance, scholarships and incentives for talented sportspersons from economically weaker sections. “There should be a transparent system for identifying and nurturing talent at an early stage so that our youth can compete at national and international levels,” he asserted.

He further advocated for organizing regular district and UT-level tournaments to provide exposure and competitive platforms to young athletes. Emphasizing employment opportunities, Shamsher Chand suggested that outstanding sportspersons should be given preference in government jobs, which would motivate more youth to take up sports professionally.

The senior leader also underlined the importance of public-private partnerships in developing sports infrastructure and promoting sporting events in J&K. He said collaboration with reputed institutions and organizations can significantly enhance the quality of training and facilities available to the youth.

Reiterating his commitment to youth welfare, Shamsher Chand said that investing in sports is ultimately an investment in peace, progress and prosperity. “Empowered youth are the backbone of a strong nation. By prioritizing sports, we can build a healthier, more disciplined and united society,” he remarked.The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from young players, local residents and sports lovers, who welcomed the call for greater focus on sports development in Jammu and Kashmir.
