IIM Jammu and The Indian Army sign landmark MoU to strengthen defence–academia collaboration

JAMMU: The Indian Institute of Management Jammu and the Indian Army signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Satwari Military Station, Jammu, to establish a strategic framework for collaboration in executive education, leadership development, management research, faculty engagement, and professional capacity building. The MoU was signed by Prof. B. S. Sahay, Director, IIM Jammu, and Maj Gen Ajit M. Yeole, VSM, GOC Tiger Division, in the presence of Lt Gen Akaash Johar, AVSM, General Officer Commanding, 9 Corps; Prof. Jabir Ali, Dean, Faculty & Research; Prof. Lt. General Sunil Kant (Retd.), Chairperson, MBA Healthcare; Prof. Prashant Mishra, Chairperson, Executive Education & Consultancy; and Brigadier Bhupinder Singh Kang (Retd.), Chief Administrative Officer, IIM Jammu, along with senior officers of the Indian Army.

A major highlight of the MoU is its comprehensive framework for strengthening leadership development, executive education, and professional capacity building for Indian Army personnel. The collaboration will provide serving personnel, veterans, and wards of Veer Naris sponsored by the Indian Army with access to postgraduate management programmes, executive education, specialized certificate programmes, and short-term management development initiatives.

It will also foster collaborative research, customized management training, faculty and officer exchanges, defence-specific case study development, seminars, conferences, and knowledge-sharing initiatives in strategic leadership, defence management, supply chain management, financial management, organizational behaviour, business analytics, and strategic decision-making. Additionally, the MoU envisages scholarships and fee concessions for eligible Army personnel, access to research and library facilities on mutually agreed terms, the establishment of a Joint Steering Committee to oversee implementation, and the provision of up to forty seats in six-month executive programmes, subject to applicable academic regulations. Collectively, these initiatives establish a strong foundation for long-term institutional collaboration, leadership excellence, management innovation, and capacity building across the defence ecosystem.

Lt Gen Akaash Johar, AVSM, General Officer Commanding, 9 Corps, mentioned that the collaboration with IIM Jammu reflected the Indian Army's continued emphasis on professional excellence and lifelong learning. He observed that contemporary management education and executive development would further strengthen the leadership, strategic thinking, and organizational capabilities of Army personnel. He added that the partnership would provide a valuable platform for knowledge exchange, specialized learning, and collaborative research, thereby contributing to the professional growth of serving personnel and veterans while fostering stronger academia-defence engagement.

Prof. B. S. Sahay, Director, IIM Jammu, mentioned that the collaboration marked an important step towards integrating contemporary management education with the leadership and organizational excellence of the Indian Army. He observed that the partnership would facilitate executive education, management research, customized learning interventions, and knowledge exchange, thereby contributing to the professional development of Armed Forces personnel while strengthening IIM Jammu's commitment to nation-building through academic excellence. He further noted that the collaboration was aligned with the vision of the National Education Policy 2020, promoting multidisciplinary learning, research, and institutional partnerships for capacity building.

Prof. Jabir Ali, Dean, Faculty & Research, IIM Jammu, remarked that the MoU marks the beginning of a strategic partnership to advance collaborative research, defence-focused management scholarship, faculty engagement, and knowledge exchange. He emphasized that by combining the Indian Army's operational expertise with IIM Jammu's academic and research excellence, the collaboration will foster indigenous case studies, evidence-based research, and innovative solutions to contemporary leadership and organizational challenges, while strengthening management practices across the defence ecosystem.

Maj Gen Ajit M. Yeole, VSM, GOC Tiger Division, remarked that the MoU establishes a comprehensive framework for executive education, collaborative research, customized management training, defence-focused case study development, and knowledge exchange between the Indian Army and IIM Jammu. He expressed confidence that this strategic partnership would nurture future-ready leaders capable of addressing contemporary organizational and strategic challenges while fostering a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and excellence.

The collaboration reflects the shared commitment of the Indian Army and IIM Jammu towards promoting excellence in leadership development, executive education, research, and institutional capacity building. By combining the operational experience of the Armed Forces with the academic expertise of IIM Jammu, the partnership seeks to develop future-ready leaders equipped to address contemporary organizational and strategic challenges across the public and defence sectors.
