NTM Skill Development Workshop on Translation inaugurated at Central University of Jammu

JAMMU: A three-day Skill Development Workshop on Translation Dogri, Hindi, Punjabi, and Urdu organized by National Translation Mission, Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysore in collaboration with School of Languages, Central University of Jammu was inaugurated at the Central University of Jammu. The workshop aims to promote multilingual competence and strengthen translation skills among students, research scholars, and language practitioners with thrust on Dogri, Punjabi, Hindi and urdu. Prof. Lalit Mangotra, President, Dogri Sanstha was the chief guest while Prof. Yashwant Singh, Registrar, presided over the function.

In his address focussed on “Translation Strategies for Science Texts Prof. Lalit Magotra discussed the challenges involved in translating scientific and technical texts due to their terminologies, explanations, concepts and processes across languages and emphasized the need for accuracy, clarity, and contextual understanding in scientific translation. He also shared practical strategies and examples for the translation of technical texts and highlighted the importance of making scientific knowledge accessible to diverse linguistic communities. Prof. Magotra further underlined that translation is not merely the translation of words, but also the translation of cultures, traditions, histories, and lived experiences.

The workshop commenced with a formal welcome address by Prof. Vandana Sharma, Dean, School of Languages and coordinator of the workshop who emphasized the significance of translations which have evolved since genesis in an unprecedented manner. Further, Prof. Sharma underscored the objective of the workshop which aligns with the mandate of NEP-2020. Dr. Tariq Khan, officer-in- charge National Translation Mission (NTM) and academic secretary Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) Mysore, highlighted the vision and objectives of the National Translation Mission (NTM) and expressed hope for future collaborative work with CUJ. The resource persons from NTM Sh. Sunil Choudhary and Mr. Jaffer Mir was also present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof.  Yashwant Singh, Registrar underscored the role of translations in the contemporary era of artificial intelligence. He emphasized that despite technological advancements and the growing role of AI in language processing, human translation continues to remain essential for preserving cultural sensitivity, linguistic diversity, and contextual understanding.

The inaugural session concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Bharat Bhushan, Head, Department of Hindi and Other Indian Languages. Dr. K Rajesh, Head, Department of English, Prof. Uday Pratap, Associate Dean academic Affairs and other deans, heads and faculty attended the inaugural session. Approximately 55 participants from different languages and disciplines have registered for the workshop. Eminent academicians and translators are resource persons for the workshop.
