In loving memory of Dr. Priya Ranjan: A mentor who treated me like family

SRINAGAR: In a strong appeal for the protection and sheltering of pigeons at religious shrines across Jammu and Kashmir, Mir Arifa Jan, State President (J&K) of BRICS Human Rights Mission and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) - Sharadchandra Pawar, has formally written to Hon’ble Chief Minister Omar Abdullah requesting immediate intervention.

The letter highlights the cultural and religious significance of pigeons in prominent shrines such as Hazratbal Shrine, Makhdoom Sahib, Charar-e-Sharief, Naqshband Sahib Shrine, and several others, where thousands of pigeons have traditionally been fed by devotees. However, due to modernization, urban development, and the transition of traditional grass rooftops to tin and concrete structures, these pigeons no longer have proper shelter, especially during harsh winters, rainfall, and snow.

Mir Arifa Jan has urged the Chief Minister to direct key departments, including the Tourism Department, J&K Wakf Board, Wildlife Department, and Forest & Climate Change Department, to take immediate steps for constructing pigeon shelters ("Kabootar Khanas") near these shrines. The initiative would align with the Wildlife Protection Act and core principles of Social Justice and Animal Rights, ensuring the preservation of these birds, which hold immense cultural and ecological importance.

"Pigeons have long been a symbol of peace and faith in our religious and cultural traditions. Their protection is not just an ecological need but also a responsibility towards preserving our heritage," said Mir Arifa Jan, emphasizing the urgency of the matter.

The letter has also been forwarded to the Union Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Minority Affairs, the J&K Waqf Board, and the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau of India, seeking broader national attention on this crucial issue.

With this proactive initiative, Mir Arifa Jan continues to champion causes that promote social justice, environmental protection, and cultural preservation in Jammu and Kashmir.
