POONCH: A two-day seminar-cum-training programme on scientific beekeeping, organized by the Department of Agriculture, began here today. The event also aimed to promote modern apiculture techniques and financial assistance schemes for farmers. The seminar attracted over 200 participants, including students, farmers, and beekeepers, evincing significant interest in the field.

The program was inaugurated by MLA Ajaz Ahmed Jan (Haveli) and Ch. Mohammad Akram (Surankote). They highlighted the vital role of beekeeping in enhancing farm productivity and improving rural livelihoods. Speaking at the inaugural session, the Chief Agriculture Officer described beekeeping as a promising agri-allied venture, emphasizing government initiatives like the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP) and the Madhu Kranti Portal, which supports beekeeper registration and subsidy disbursement.

Farmers were informed about financial incentives, including an 80% subsidy on beekeeping units, aimed at bolstering the sector in the region. Expert speakers conducted sessions on scientific hive management, disease control, pollination benefits, and honey extraction techniques. MLA Ajaz Ahmed Jan commended the Chief Agriculture Officer for his contribution towards mushroom production, while MLA Ch. Mohd Akram recognized the Agriculture Department's efforts to enhance agricultural activities, stressing that 90% of the district's economy relies on agriculture.

The event concluded with an interactive session where beekeepers and farmers shared experiences and discussed challenges. The programme will continue tomorrow with practical training on colony management, honey harvesting, and disease prevention techniques, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience for all participants.
