JAMMU: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) executive member Raman Suri while expressing deep anguish over the devastating fire at Shiv Market, Jammu, asked the National Conference (NC) government to move beyond symbolic visits and photo opportunities by ministers and provide immediate financial assistance to the affected traders to help them rebuild their businesses and restore their livelihoods. He said several shops were gutted, leaving traders devastated and facing huge financial losses in this inferno.

Suri said there could hardly be a bigger tragedy for these traders than watching their years of hard work, investments and businesses turn into ashes, particularly just ahead of Diwali. At a time when traders were expecting the festive season to bring business and financial relief, this unfortunate incident has pushed many families into uncertainty. He said the administration cannot afford to remain a mute spectator while affected businessmen struggle to recover from this devastating loss.

He demanded that the government immediately announce a special relief and compensation package for every affected trader, covering the loss of shops, stocks, machinery, furniture and other business assets. He stressed that financial assistance must be substantial and delivered without unnecessary procedural delays so that traders can restart their businesses rather than remain dependent on assurances and temporary expressions of sympathy.

Suri further urged the government to direct the Public Works Department (PWD) or Jammu and Kashmir Projects Construction Corporation (JKPCC) to take up the reconstruction and restoration of the gutted shops on a priority basis. He also called for a special mechanism to help affected traders procure and restock their goods so that their businesses can resume at the earliest. The government must stand with these businessmen not just in words but through practical measures that restore their commercial establishments and confidence. If possible some soft loan should also be extended to traders so that they could rebuild their businesses.

He said the real test of the administration is not how many ministers visit the site or how many photographs are taken, but how quickly relief reaches those who have lost everything. The traders of Shiv Market deserve immediate intervention, financial support and a time-bound rehabilitation plan. Raman Suri appealed to the government to treat this tragedy as an emergency and ensure that every affected trader gets an opportunity to rebuild his business with dignity. "These traders do not need photo opportunities; they need their shops rebuilt, their stocks restored and their livelihoods saved," he said.
