- E-waste collection, Swachhata pledge and record-management initiatives support the Ministry of Education campaign and a cleaner, greener campus
SRINAGAR: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar on Wednesday organised e-waste collection, cleanliness and plantation drives under the Ministry of Education’s Special Campaign for Disposal of Pending Matters (SCDPM) 6.0 and the Viksit Bharat Yuva Connect Programme.
Held under the guidance of NIT Srinagar Director Prof. Anurag Mishra, the initiatives aim to promote responsible e-waste management, environmental conservation and the systematic disposal of obsolete materials.
The e-waste collection drive began at 10 a.m. at the designated collection point near the campus fountain. Bearing the message, “Recycle Responsibly for a Clean and Green Campus,” it encouraged students, faculty members and staff to segregate electronic waste from general waste and ensure its responsible disposal.
The Institute also organised a plantation drive to promote environmental sustainability and help develop a greener campus.
Participants included Registrar Prof. Atikur Rehman; Dean of Alumni and International Affairs Prof. M. A. Shah; Deputy Registrar (Administration) Faisal Ganai; Dr. Shahid Saleem; Dr. Jitendra Gurjar, Nodal Officer for Viksit Bharat; Dr. H. S. Pali; Dr. Pramod Yadav; Dr. Manoj Kumar; student coordinators Sukhdev and Jasmeet Kour; and other faculty members and students.
A Swachhata pledge was administered the same day, followed by a cleanliness and sanitation drive involving students, faculty, staff, mess and canteen operators, shopkeepers and other service providers. Operators were directed to clean their premises and surrounding areas and ensure proper waste disposal. Before-and-after documentation was also carried out at five locations.
As part of the campaign, the Institute began identifying obsolete physical files, electronic files and other unwanted materials for possible disposal in accordance with prescribed record-retention requirements.
Dr. Jitendra Gurjar, NIT Srinagar’s Nodal Officer for SCDPM, said the campaign was intended to strengthen institutional cleanliness, encourage responsible e-waste management and expedite the disposal of pending and obsolete materials. He emphasised that collective participation was essential to maintaining a clean, green and well-organised campus.
An earlier stakeholder meeting, held on October 27, reviewed previously identified e-waste and planned the identification and segregation of additional obsolete electronic and electrical items.
The Institute is also pursuing the disposal of items identified by its Scrap/Condemnation Committee and approved by the competent authority, in accordance with prescribed procedures.
