  • Stresses connectivity to all Gram Panchayats and calls for effective solid waste management in rural areas

KULGAM: Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kulgam, Shahzad Alam, today chaired separate meetings to review the implementation of BharatNet and solid waste management in rural areas of the district.

During the meeting on BharatNet, the status of implementation and the proposed plan for extending connectivity to all Gram Panchayats through BSNL were discussed. It was decided to initiate the implementation process in Manzgam Block as the first phase, followed by a phased rollout across the district.

The DC stressed the importance of strengthening digital connectivity in rural areas to facilitate access to online government services and improve service delivery at the grassroots level. The concerned officers were directed to ensure close coordination for the smooth and timely implementation of the initiative.

In a separate meeting, the DC also reviewed solid waste management in rural areas and discussed measures to strengthen waste disposal practices, improve sanitation and ensure cleaner surroundings across the district.

He stressed the need for coordinated efforts by the concerned departments and Panchayati Raj Institutions for effective implementation of solid waste management measures. He also emphasised public awareness and community participation in maintaining cleanliness and promoting a hygienic environment.

The Deputy Commissioner expressed concern over segregation sheds in rural areas being used as dumping sites instead of serving their intended purpose. He directed all Block Development Officers to accord top priority to solid waste management and ensure the proper functioning of segregation sheds, with emphasis on proper waste segregation and scientific disposal to maintain cleanliness and sanitation in rural areas. The meetings were attended by ADC Kulgam, CPO Kulgam, ACR Kulgam, ACP Kulgam, DE BSNL South and BDOs.
