UDHAMPUR: Department of Youth Services & Sports Udhampur today organized the Division-Level Inter-District Basketball Tournament/Competitions for Under-14 Boys and Girls here at Subash Stadium, Udhampur. Deputy Commissioner Minga Sherpa, the chief guest, declared the tournament open and extended his best wishes to all the participating sportspersons and teams.

Around 87 young sportspersons, including 48 boys and 39 girls, representing different districts of Jammu Division are participating in the competitions. The tournament is being conducted under the patronage and guidance of Director General, Youth Services & Sports, J&K Anuradha Gupta and under the overall supervision of District Youth Services & Sports Officer Tarsem Singh.

While addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner welcomed all the participating players and appreciated their enthusiasm and dedication towards sports. The DC highlighted the need for continuous improvement of sports infrastructure. He informed that Udhampur administration recently held discussion with the Directorate of Youth Services & Sports and J&K Sports Council for the upgradation of sports infrastructure and provision of better facilities for budding sportspersons of the district. He called upon the youth, sportspersons and civil society to give their suggestions for further development and upgradation of sports facilities in the district.

He assured that the District Administration would extend all possible support for promoting sports and creating a conducive sporting ecosystem for young athletes. Referring to the Khelo India initiative, the DC observed that there has been a significant change in the attitude of parents towards sports. ā€œEarlier parents questioned their children for spending time in sports, today they actively encourage them to participate in sports, undergo professional coaching and pursue competitive sporting careers,ā€ he noted. He called upon the youth to stay away from drugs and adopt a healthy and positive lifestyle.
