JAMMU: Director Horticulture Jammu Gul Sayed today undertook an inspection tour of the Government Mega Fruit Plant Nursery (MFPN) Chakroi, RS Pura. He was accompanied by District Horticulture Officer Perminder Singh.
The Director reviewed ongoing activities in the Tissue Culture Laboratory and the Bio-Control Laboratory, where Technical Officers Amit Saraf and Zia-ur-Rashid apprised him of the scientific and technical operations under way. The Director appreciated the officers' efforts in adopting scientific techniques for raising fruit plants through tissue culture.
The Director also attended the ongoing one-month training course on Fruit Plant Orchard/Nursery Development and Management being conducted for unemployed youth at the facility. Interacting with the trainees, he spoke of the programme's potential to enhance their technical skills in nursery operations and enable sustainable income and self-reliance. The training programme is headed by Divisional Training Officer Virender Kumar.
The Director further inspected ongoing nursery operations, including budding, grafting and layering techniques, showcased by District Horticulture Officer (In-charge, MFPN Chakroi) Perminder Singh and District Horticulture Officer Abhinav Gupta. He advised officers to promote cultivation of medicinal plants and introduce latest suitable cultivars of mango, litchi, guava and citrus, so the nursery can become a centre for diverse germplasm collection.
The Director appreciated the officers and staff for maintaining scientific rigour at the nursery, and reiterated the Department's commitment to strengthening tissue culture, bio-control and skill-development initiatives across Jammu division.
The Director later visited the Government Fruit Plants Nursery, Miran Sahib, Maralian, accompanied by Horticulture Development Officer Dheeraj Sharma. He inspected nursery activities and issued directions to officers and staff for effective implementation of departmental programmes, maintenance of quality planting material and improvement of nursery infrastructure.
