JAMMU: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Raman Suri has welcomed the ongoing anti-drug campaign in Jammu Kashmir, terming it a “commendable and timely initiative” aimed at safeguarding the future of the youth and society at large. He said that while such awareness runs and campaigns are appreciable, a more focused and ground-level approach is required to effectively curb the growing menace of drug abuse.
Raman Suri emphasized that identified drug hotspots and vulnerable areas must be regularly visited not only by police authorities but also by social activists and community leaders and people sensitized about the menace of drug abuse. He stressed that public awareness remains the most powerful tool in fighting drug addiction. “People must be educated about the severe consequences of drug abuse not only in terms of health deterioration but also the legal implications and social damage it causes,” he said.
Raman Suri further urged that schools and colleges should be actively involved in this campaign. He recommended organizing regular seminars, workshops, and debates on drug abuse to sensitize students at an early stage. “Educational institutions are the foundation of our society, and engaging youth through meaningful discussions will help build resilience against such harmful practices,” he added.
Highlighting the importance of real-life experiences, Suri suggested that individuals who have successfully recovered from drug addiction through rehabilitation centres should be encouraged to share their journeys with students. “Hearing firsthand accounts from those who have overcome addiction can leave a lasting impact and deter young minds from falling into the trap,” he said.
This he said will be a bold and effective step to make people aware of their surroundings and on the other hand it will boost the confidence of those who have come out of this menace. He called for a united effort involving administration, law enforcement agencies, educators, civil society, and families to ensure a drug-free Jammu Kashmir.
