GANDERBAL: Department of Biotechnology, School of Life Sciences (SLS), with the support from the Health Centre, Central University of Kashmir (CUKashmir), observed World Heart Day-2026 with an awareness programme on the theme “Cardiovascular Diseases: Prevention, Diagnostics and Community Awareness” at the Tulmulla Campus here Tuesday.
Addressing the gathering comprising faculty members, scholars and students, Registrar, Dr. Nisar Ahmad Mir, highlighted the seriousness of cardiovascular disorders and the need to make heart-health awareness an integral part of community life. He stressed that healthy habits, appropriate nutrition and attention to conditions such as blood pressure and diabetes need to be cultivated from an early age. “We have to take care of all those issues from childhood,” he said, while urging the academic community to popularize the benefits of healthy living among families, colleagues and peers.
In his address, Dean, SLS, Prof. Abid Hamid Dar, emphasized the need to understand cardiovascular health in the broader context of human physiology and disease. He explained that the heart is often affected as a secondary consequence of disorders originating in other organs and systems, including hypertension, diabetes, pulmonary diseases, infections and thyroid dysfunction.
He explained how disorders of the kidneys, pancreas, liver, lungs and endocrine system can eventually place considerable stress on the cardiovascular system. Prof. Dar further highlighted the physiological characteristics of the heart and its central role in sustaining life. He noted that the heart's functioning is regulated by essential ions such as calcium, potassium and sodium and stressed the importance of understanding cardiovascular health through an integrated scientific perspective.
Speaking on the occasion, Head, Deptt of Biotechnology, Dr. Dharmendra Singh, said observance of the Day was an important opportunity to transform scientific knowledge into greater public awareness. He stressed that the absence of symptoms should not lead people to assume that everything is necessarily normal. “At least after a certain age, we should go through certain check-ups, regular check-ups,” he said. Dr. Singh urged members of the academic community to use their networks to spread awareness about cardiovascular health. “Since we are in academia, we are well-educated and we have the power of networking with students and our fellows. So we should spread a word of this awareness and remove ignorance,” he said.
Organizer of the event, Dr. Santosh Kumar, in his welcome address, said the cardiovascular diseases remain among the most important public health challenges worldwide and hence the Day serves as an opportunity to create awareness, encourage healthy behavior and strengthen the connection between the research, healthcare and community.
