JAMMU: Aligning with the vision of the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. Umesh Rai, to extend educational provisioning to constituent colleges, the Department of Lifelong Learning (DLL), University of Jammu, in collaboration with Government Degree College (GDC), Ramgarh, organised a career awareness programme on “Communication Skills and Careers in Environmental Sciences” for the students of the college. The programme was inaugurated by Prof. Priyanka Sharma, Director, Department of Lifelong Learning, University of Jammu, and Dr. Meeru Abrol, Principal, GDC Ramgarh.
In her address, Prof. Priyanka Sharma apprised the students about the various programmes being organised by the Department of Lifelong Learning. She highlighted the significance of organising awareness and career-oriented programmes on themes such as communication skills and environmental sciences, particularly in the context of the rapidly changing job market. She emphasised that effective communication is an essential skill across almost every profession and industry and plays a vital role in academic success, employability and professional growth.
The technical sessions were delivered by Dr. Harleen Kour, Assistant Professor, Department of Commerce, University of Jammu, and Dr. Anshu Gupta, Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Jammu, who served as the resource persons. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Rewa Khajuria, Counsellor, Department of Lifelong Learning, University of Jammu.
Dr. Harleen Kour conducted an interactive session on formal and non-formal communication skills, with particular emphasis on body language, effective interpersonal communication and conversation starters. Through practical activities and interaction with the students, she highlighted how effective communication can enhance confidence, build positive professional relationships and improve performance in academic as well as workplace settings.
Dr. Anshu Gupta, in her presentation, provided the students with an overview of the scope and career opportunities in environmental sciences. She discussed the growing relevance of environmental knowledge in the context of climate change, sustainable development, environmental protection and emerging green careers. She also familiarized the students with various avenues for higher studies, research and employment in the field of environmental sciences and encouraged them to explore opportunities in emerging and interdisciplinary areas.
Earlier, in her welcome address, Dr. Meeru Abrol said that the college has always remained committed to organising activities contributing to the overall academic, professional and personal development of its students. She appreciated the collaboration with the Department of Lifelong Learning and expressed the hope that such programmes would provide students with valuable exposure and guidance at an important stage of their academic and career journey.
Around 73 students from different semesters of the college participated enthusiastically in the interactive sessions. The programme provided the students with an opportunity to interact directly with experts and gain practical insights into communication skills as well as emerging career opportunities in environmental sciences.
The program concluded with a formal vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Sandeep Kumari, who expressed gratitude to the Director, DLL, Principal and faculty members of GDC Ramgarh, the resource persons and all participating students for their valuable contribution and active participation in making the programme meaningful and enriching.
