JAMMU: To enhance the scientific acumen and practical research skills of research scholars and faculty members of the University of Jammu and its affiliated colleges, the Department of Botany, University of Jammu, today inaugurated a DBT-Builder-funded two-day National Practical Training Programme on “Latest Trends in Plant Sciences: Focus on Amino Acid Analyser and Flow Cytometry.”

The programme is being organised on September 15–16, 2026, with the objective of providing participants with hands-on training in sophisticated analytical techniques and their applications in life-science research.

The inaugural ceremony was graced by Prof. Yash Pal Sharma, Dean, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Jammu and Rector, Udhampur Campus, as the Chief Guest. Prof. Susheel Verma, Head, Department of Botany; Prof. Namrata Sharma, Co-PI, DBT-Builder Programme; Dr. Sikander Pal, Organising Secretary; and Dr. Praveen Kumar, Senior Scientist, Bionvid, New Delhi, were also present.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Yash Pal Sharma emphasised the importance of adopting advanced technologies and modern analytical approaches to strengthen the quality, relevance and impact of scientific research. He encouraged young researchers to develop practical expertise in sophisticated instrumentation and apply these technologies to address contemporary challenges in plant and life sciences.

Earlier, Prof. Susheel Verma welcomed the delegates and resource persons and highlighted the importance of specialised training programmes in building research capacity. Prof. Namrata Sharma briefed the participants about the DBT-Builder Programme and its contribution towards strengthening high-end research infrastructure at the University of Jammu, particularly in the Department of Botany. She also highlighted the importance of making sophisticated instruments accessible to researchers through structured training programmes.

Dr. Sikander Pal, Organising Secretary, explained the scientific relevance of the training programme and its significance for young researchers and faculty members. He highlighted how amino acid analysis and flow cytometry can provide valuable insights into plant growth, development, stress responses, cellular processes and crop improvement.

Around 40 participants from the University of Jammu and associated institutions are participating in the two-day programme and will receive hands-on training in the operation, applications and interpretation of data generated through amino acid analysis and flow cytometry.

The training is expected to benefit researchers working across different areas of life sciences, including plant physiology, molecular biology, biotechnology, microbiology and crop science.

The inaugural session was attended by research scholars, students and faculty members, including Dr. Geeta, Dr. Harish Dutt, Dr. Skarma Nonzom, Dr. Parvinder, Dr. Rakesh and Dr. Shash Pal. The proceedings of the inaugural ceremony were conducted by Ms. Kamna, Research Scholar, Department of Botany.
