SHOPIAN: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Shopian in collaboration with Govt. Degree College Shopian today conducted an awareness programme on ‘World Soil Health Day 2024’ with the theme, ‘Caring for Soils; Measure, Monitor and Manage.’ Prof. Mohammad Shafeeq, Principal Govt. Degree College was the chief guest of the event, and other dignitaries who attended the event were Dr. Zaffar Afroz Badri, senior Scientist & Head, KVK-Shopian.

The programme was also attended by team of scientists from both the collaborating organizations besides 60 participants from different villages of the district. Dr. Zaffar deliberated upon the use of integrated approach to improve the soil health and different ways and means to cut down the input cost by adopting latest university recommended technologies for the betterment of the district.

 Dr. Bilal Ahmad, Scientist Horticulture gave an elaborated lecture through power point presentation on sustainable horticulture practices to reap the better dividends, improve the soil health with integrated nutrient and pest management. The programme was conducted under the aegis of the ‘Exposure visit cum practical demonstration of different orchard layout systems at KVK Shopian.’

The main aim of the programme was to upgrade and upscale the undergraduate Horticulture Professionals with up to date knowledge of different orchard layout systems and multiplication of clonal rootstocks for efficient use of resources to reap better dividends along with the exposure to hi-tech sensor based poly houses available at KVK Shopian. Practical demonstration of different layout systems of orchards and methods of rootstock multiplication and propagation was also carried out after the programme at main campus Shopian.
