AKHNOOR: Bharatiya Janata Party workers and people from Khour and adjoining areas staged a strong protest against the National Conference-led J&K Government over the Statehood Resolution passed by the Assembly, particularly objecting to its references to the 2000 Autonomy Resolution and the 2024 resolution seeking restoration of special status. The BJP leaders said that the demand for restoration of Statehood should not be mixed with issues relating to the erstwhile constitutional arrangement of Jammu and Kashmir.

The protest was led by J&K BJP General Secretary Baldev Singh Billawaria and All Cells Incharge Ved Sharma, along with Akhnoor District President Kuldeep Sharma, former MLA Rajeev Sharma, former MLA Khour Dr. Krishna Lal, Border Cell Convenor Akash Chopra, Mandal team members and a large number of local residents.

Addressing the protesters, Baldev Singh Billawaria said that the National Conference is once again attempting to divert the attention of the people by bringing the 2000 Autonomy Resolution and the 2024 special-status resolution into a resolution concerning Statehood. He said that if the issue is restoration of Statehood, then the resolution should remain confined to Statehood. “Why are references to the 2000 resolution and the pre-1953 constitutional position being brought into it? These are separate issues,” he said. He accused the NC Government of using constitutional and emotional issues to conceal its failures on the ground.

Ved Sharma said that the people of Jammu and Kashmir had been promised several things in the NC manifesto, but the government has failed to fulfil its major commitments. He questioned the failure to provide 200 units of free electricity and free LPG cylinders, among other promises, and said that instead of addressing unemployment, development and basic public concerns, the government was focusing on politically contentious issues.

Kuldeep Sharma said that the people of Khour and Akhnoor would not allow the National Conference to divert public attention from its unfulfilled promises. He said the government must give an account of its performance and explain why its manifesto commitments remain pending.
