JAMMU: The three day orientation programme for MLAs of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly will commence from 9th of January, 2025 at Central Hall of J&K Legislative Assembly Complex, Jammu. The programme is being organised by J&K Legislative Assembly Secretariat in collaboration with PRIDE, Lok Sabha Secretariat. The inaugural function of the programme will be graced by distinguished dignitaries like Chief Minister, Speaker, J&K Legislative Assembly, Deputy Chief Minister as well as other senior officers.

The first Legislative Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir was constituted on 8th October 2024. The ninety (90) Member House presently has eighty eight (88) members, of which, fifty (50) members have been elected for the first time. In order to help the newly elected members to effectively discharge their onerous responsibilities of meeting the aspirations of people, this three day orientation programme is being held on Parliamentary Practices, Procedure and Conduct of Business in the House.

The programme will feature discussions by eminent Parliamentarians like Dr. Sanjay Jaiswal, Chairperson, Committee on Estimates; N.K Premachandran and Dr. Satayapal Singh, former Members Lok Sabha. The subjects to be discussed and deliberated during the programme included Legislative Processes, Budgetary Process, Executive Accountability through Questions, Committee System and Information Support to Legislators, Do’s and Don’ts for an Effective Legislator and a session on NEVA.

The insights gained through these lectures will provide the newly elected members with a deep understanding of working of the legislature and the responsibility they carry as elected representatives. The lectures will also be co-hosted by Senior Officers of the Lok Sabha Secretariat. This programme is expected to enhance the capacity of MLAs to significantly contribute to policy formulation and ensure its effective implementation for greater good of the Union Territory.

When he appointed me Editor-in-Chief of JK Monitor, he never treated me as an employee, but as a younger brother, offering warmth, trust, respect and invaluable guidance. I will always be grateful for his faith in me, his encouragement and the lessons he shared.

Dr. Ranjan was a rare and noble soul—humble, compassionate, intellectually brilliant and always willing to help others. A visionary thinker, he believed in using knowledge and abilities to make a meaningful difference. His influence lives on through the people he guided, the work he inspired and the countless lives he touched.

For me, he will always be the elder brother who believed in me and guided me with affection. I will cherish his kindness and lessons forever. May his soul rest in eternal peace. He will be deeply missed and never forgotten.

We at JK Monitor are profoundly saddened by the sudden demise of our Founding Chairman, Dr. Priya Ranjan. IN LOVING MEMORY Dr Priya Ranjan

A brilliant mind who studied at Netarhat Residential School and graduated in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur before earning his PhD from the University of Maryland, Dr. Ranjan chose to return to India and dedicate his life to teaching, research and social good.

His pioneering work in networked systems, AI, robotics and biomedical applications—especially computer-vision tools for early detection of cancer and heart disease—reflected his deep belief that advanced technology must serve humanity.

For more than 15 years at JK Monitor, he remained a loyal friend, mentor and collaborator, marked by rare humility, intellectual integrity and quiet generosity. His passing leaves a void that cannot be filled. Priya, you will be deeply missed. Your life continues to remind us that knowledge finds its highest purpose in the service of others.
