SRINAGAR: Government Degree College, Ganderbal in collaboration with the School of Law, University of Kashmir organised “Legal Literacy Program in the college conference hall. In the welcome address Lt Dr Salma Khan, head of the department insisted that such type of awareness programs are essential for creating informed and active citizens who can play an important role in creating a just society and where justice will be accessible to all.
Prof Fouzia Fatima, principal of the college, impressed upon the need of empowering young adults with knowledge of their legal and constitutional rights and duties. 16 participants from the school of Law delivered there presentations on various laws like domestic violence, consumer rights, mental health and well-being, sexual harassment, right to education, right to legal aid.
Dr Iftikar Hussain Bhat, and Dr Junaid Aalam from the Department of law, University of Kashmir shared their views on how these programs enable important stakeholders of society in understanding laws, their entitlements, and how to access justice services particularly Free Legal Aid meant for the marginalised sections of society. The program was attended by faculty members, students and cadets of 9 J&K Girls Bn. Later the session encompassed discussions on fundamental rights, legal responsibilities, gender equality, and the importance of understanding legal frameworks in society.
