JAMMU: The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Jammu continued its comprehensive five-day Orientation Program for the incoming batches at its state-of-the art campus in Jagti. The program welcomed the 5th Batch of Ph.D. (2024-28), the 3rd Batch of Ph.D. (WP) (2024-28), the 9th Batch of MBA (2024-26), the 3rd Batch of MBA (HA&HM) (2024-26), and the 4th Batch of EMBA (2024-26).
The third day commenced with an invigorating yoga session led by Yoga Guru Shri Sahil Mehra coordinated by Team Anandam, IIM Jammu. The session, titled âMaximize Happiness and Mindfulness,â set a positive and reflective tone for the dayâs activities, emphasizing the importance of mental well-being and mindfulness for the students.
Following the yoga session, Dr. Ashish Kumar, Chairperson, Student Affairs, IIM Jammu provided a detailed overview of the âStudentsâ Policy, Rules and Regulations at IIM Jammu.â This session was crucial in acquainting the students with the institutional guidelines, ensuring a smooth and disciplined academic journey ahead. The morning continued with a series of outbound activities designed to foster team building and collaboration among the students, enhancing their interpersonal skills and camaraderie.
The afternoon also included an insightful series of sessions with industry speakers. Mr. Shashi Kumar K, Talent Acquisition and Early Careers (University Campus) India Lead at Publicis Sapient, delivered a session focusing on industry expectations and career pathways. He advised students to be open-minded and ready to accept themselves and new experiences. He stressed the importance of not being centred around one's own thoughts and being willing to embrace exposure and growth. Ms. Sheetal Sharma, Associate Director People and Culture, Grant Thornton, discussed âThe Future of Work: Integration of AI in HR to Build a Culture of Happiness and Empowerment.â She underscored the significance of ethics and integrity in the workplace. She pointed out that organizations need individuals who uphold these values to build a trustworthy and reliable work environment. These sessions provided the students with a forward-looking perspective on career development and the evolving role of technology in the workplace.
Another set of industry speaker sessions featured Mr. Satish Mohapatra, EVP Talent Acquisition, Maruti Suzuki, who shared his life journey and insights on the future of HR. He discussed the dual impact of AI on the job market, creating both chaos and new opportunities. He emphasized that in a technologically driven world, it is the people who make the difference, highlighting the value of human skills and capabilities. Mr. Koustubh Kanade, Senior Leadership at British Biologicals, who was also present at the event, explored âStrategic Thinking in Healthcare: Examples in Industry and Government.â He encouraged students to think creatively and take risks to achieve success in the corporate world. He shared insights on the importance of innovative thinking and the willingness to step outside one's comfort zone. These sessions offered practical and strategic insights into diverse fields.
A significant session on placements featured Prof. Jabir Ali, Dean Academics and Chairperson Placements, IIM Jammu, Dr. Baljeet Singh, Co-Chairperson, Placement, IIM Jammu, and Dr. Atanu Dutta, Placement Officer, IIM Jammu. Prof. Jabir Ali emphasized the student-driven nature of the placement process, with the Placement Office providing all needed support. He gave an overview of the placement scenario and informed the new students about the various student placement committees, including the Industry Interaction Committee (IIC), Disha Committee, and Placement Committee. He urged the students to actively participate and contribute to strengthening the
placement activities at IIM Jammu. Dr. Baljeet Singh, Co-Chairperson, Placements, IIM Jammu provided further insights into the placement activities, detailing the roles of the three pivotal committees: the Industry Interaction Committee, the Placement Committee, and the Disha Committee. He highlighted how these committees are instrumental in driving successful placements, fostering industry connections, and ensuring a robust placement process for the students at the Institute.
Prof. Jabir Ali, Dean Academics, IIM Jammu, highlighted the importance of creating real-time learning experiences in every class during his session on "Teaching through Case Study." He explained that a case study is a powerful pedagogical tool that presents real-life business solutions and scenarios, challenging students to engage deeply with the case studies. The session emphasized the need for students to prepare themselves to tackle these scenarios, engage in discussions, and generate knowledge through deliberations. He noted that if students do not speak up in class, the value of the case study is lost. He stressed that every day should bring a 'wow' factor in their learning. Setting clear learning objectives is crucial, as real learning emerges from the conflicts and discussions in class. Through case study analysis, he mentioned that students should connect with the protagonist, identify and analyse issues, and develop and evaluate recommendations. He advised students to always note down key points and highlights to make the most of these discussions and reminded them that learning happens when they have the zeal to learn.
The afternoon concluded with two engaging sessions: Shri Mohit Gupta, Co-Founder of Friends of Books (FROB), emphasized the role of curiosity in the learning process. He pointed out that without curiosity, one cannot learn effectively, even with access to all the necessary resources and facilities. He discussed the challenges and successes encountered along the way, offering insights into building a successful venture in the realm of books and entrepreneurship. Inspector Gagandeep Singh, Cyber Cell, Jammu, provided valuable insights into cybersecurity and its increasing significance in today's scenario. He discussed emerging threats, best practices for digital safety, and the role of proactive measures in safeguarding personal and organizational data. His session underscored the critical need for awareness and preparedness in the face of evolving cyber threats, offering practical advice to students on navigating the digital landscape securely.
Dr. Sarbjit Singh, Chairperson, International Relations, IIM Jammu conducted an enlightening session on the âInternational Studentâs Exchange Program and Working in a Cross-Cultural Environment.â He provided students with valuable insights into global opportunities and the importance of cultural adaptability in todayâs interconnected world. Dr. Somu Gorai, Co-chairperson, International Relations, IIM Jammu, added that the International Studentâs Exchange Program is a transformative experience that broadens perspectives and enhances cultural understanding. He emphasized that it prepares students to thrive in diverse environments and equips them with the skills necessary to succeed in a globalized market.
The day wrapped up with a vibrant cultural program by âNatrangâ led by Padmashri Balwant Thakur. The cultural performances celebrated the rich heritage of the region and fostered a sense of community among the students.
