SRINAGAR: Under CSIR Jigyasa programme a ‘Two Day Hands-on Workshop’ was organised for the students of Army Goodwill School Wayne Kupwara and Army Goodwill School Hajinar, Tanghdar from 8th to 9th August 2024. The workshop was organized under the patronage of Dr Zabeer Ahmed, Director CSIR IIIM Jammu and supervision of Er Ab Rahim, Head IIIM (Br) Srinagar. The event was inaugurated in presence of the Scientists and Technologists of the Institute. 55 students and accompanying faculty members from AGS Wayne Kupwara and AGS Hajinar Tanghdar participated in the programme.

During the programme, the participating students were given exposure to various scientific and technological activities undertaken at the Institute. The participants were introduced to the techniques of DNA isolation, electrophoresis, microscopy and cell culture in Microbiology lab. They were also demonstrated with the methods for pH testing of solutions, TLC, Acid base Titration, Aldol condensation, Isolation of binary organic mixture and solvent recovery using rotavapor in Chemistry lab.

Earlier in his welcome address Dr Shahid Rasool, Senior Scientist, complimented the management and the participating students of AGS Wayne and AGS Hajinar for their active participation in the Jigyasa programme. He presented the overview of multi-sectoral research and developmental pursuits of the CSIR India and the mandate of CSIR-IIIM Jammu for shaping the S&T led inclusive development of the region. He also highlighted the technological advances in agriculture sector made through the use of smart technologies and IOT based crop models that have led to transformational changes in the sector.  

The opening remarks and overall objectives of the Jigyasa programme were delivered by Dr Khursheed A Bhat Coordinator, CSIR Jigyasa Programme. Dr Bhat emphasized on inculcating scientific temper among the young and budding students for the betterment of the society and mankind. He highlighted the importance of scientific interventions for mitigation of global warming, climate change and antibiotic resistance. Dr Syed Riyaz-ul-Hassan Andrabi, Sr. Pr. Scientist in his address at the event presented the comprehensive overview of CSIR initiatives for researchers and aspiring scientists.

He informed that CSIR Jigyasa has played a significant role in promotion of the scientific learning’s and technological advances among the youth that has resulted in their increased curiosity to pursue science careers. He highlighted the role of science and technology in addressing the challenges in global human healthcare and wellbeing. An interactive session was also held during the event wherein the Scientists (Dr Fayaz Malik, Dr Riyaz Ul Hassan and Dr Shahid Rasool) addressed intriguing queries of the participants. The programme concluded with certificate distribution to the participants in the valedictory session.
