• 59-year-old Garhwal Rifles veteran finishes third in 122-km Silk Route Ultra and 42.195-km Marathon

DEHRADUN: Subedar and Honorary Captain Shivanand Dangwal (Retd) of the 12th Battalion, The Garhwal Rifles, has once again demonstrated his endurance and determination by securing two podium finishes at the Ladakh Marathon 2026. The 59-year-old veteran from Tehri Garhwal finished third in the gruelling 122-km Silk Route Ultra and also secured third position in the 42.195-km Marathon.

Capt Dangwal joined The Garhwal Rifles in April 1986 and retired from the Army in August 2014 after nearly three decades of service. His transition from military service to competitive endurance running has seen him establish an impressive record in some of the country's most challenging high-altitude events.

He won the 42-km Leh Marathon in 2023, the 72-km Khardung La Challenge in 2024 and the 122-km Silk Route Ultra in 2025. His two podium finishes this year have further strengthened his reputation as a veteran endurance athlete.

Hailing from a remote area of Tehri Garhwal, Capt Dangwal's achievements reflect the discipline, resilience and mental toughness acquired during his years in uniform. His performances at the age of 59 have become a source of inspiration for veterans and aspiring endurance athletes. His journey stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of a soldier one that continues to strive for excellence long after hanging up the uniform.
