MUMBAI: Sightsavers India, a development organization dedicated to eradicating avoidable blindness and promoting equality of opportunity for individuals with disabilities, announces the commencement of applications for its annual Fellowship Program for the year 2024. The application window remains open until 30th June 2024, with the program scheduled to commence in August 2024.
The Sightsavers India Fellowship Program provides a distinctive and promising career pathway for ophthalmologists, crafted to guide selected fellows through a rewarding 24-month journey. This structured program enhances skills and provides mentorship across various domains, including clinical and surgical ophthalmology, as well as managerial and holistic life skills development.
Mr. RN Mohanty, CEO of Sightsavers India, expresses his excitement for the program by saying, “The program continues to gain popularity among young and aspiring ophthalmologists. It serves as a transformative career opportunity, designed to shape fresh post-graduates into well-rounded surgeons. Over the course of 24 months, our fellows receive training and mentorship from industry leaders. They have the opportunity to refine their clinical and surgical skills, engage in managing community-based hospitals, participate in surveys, and develop their interests and goals while working alongside senior leadership. These experiences contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the entire eye-health landscape.”
Upon acceptance, fellows undergo an intensive four-month training focused on Small Incision Cataract Surgery (SICS), a vital aspect of the fellowship. Subsequently, they are placed within peripheral centers across one of eight states: Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. These placements facilitate continuous skills enhancement and invaluable personal interactions with respected leaders in the eye care and development sectors.
At each stage of the program, emphasis is placed on optimizing learning experiences, enabling fellows to evolve into well-rounded, seasoned professionals. Furthermore, they receive an attractive stipend throughout the duration of the fellowship, recognizing their dedication and contribution.
