- Can you describe the natural beauty of Bhaderwah, also known as Chota Kashmir? What are some of the remarkable features that make it stand out?
Ans.1: The magnificent bowl shaped Bhaderwah valley stands like a heaven in the lap of snow bed "The Sonbain" on the Ashapati mountain range appearing over Bhaderwah. Located in the foothills of middle Himalayas, the mesmerizing valley is home to panoramic landscapes, breathtaking picturesque places which leave one spellbound.
Snow covered mountains, rich forest cover of Deodar, Kail, Pine, crystal clear streams, gushing rivers especially river " Neeru", pristine breeze, lush green landscapes, clear blue skies takes one to a world of peace, solace & solitude and compels one to visit this place again and again.
The natural untouched raw beauty of Bhaderwah with rich fauna and flora, pristine and fresh environment, panoramic landscapes and more importantly a simplistic natural place far from the madding crowd are some of the remarkable features which make it stand out from others.
- How would you define the cultural heritage of Bhaderwah? What aspects of the local culture are particularly unique and worth preserving?
Ans.2: Culture resides in the heart and soul of people, same holds true with the people of Bhaderwah. Owing to the cultural diversity of Bhaderwah, it has a rich culture and tradition since ancient times.
Starting with the fairs & festivals, some of the famous ones are Mela Pat, Sobar Dhar Mela etc in which people from different backgrounds and regions participate. These fairs holds spiritual and historical importance.
Important festivals includes Kanchoth, Agricultural harvest, snow thawing celebrations are also important festivals. Pujas like Dharam Dhees are also performed. Then comes the folk dances and musics of Bhaderwah as folk holds mainstay in culture of any place.
Famous dances are Dhakku, Ghurai, Kud, Gujjar dance, Ram Ravan Nach etc. Bhaderwah folk is incomplete without folk music which is performed with flutes, Ransingha, Dhol etc. Pahari music of Bhaderwah is mesmerizing just like Bhaderwahi language and people. These are extremely captivating.
All these fairs, festivals, folk music, dances are related to the very existence of Bhaderwahi people since centuries. These are being preserved and carried by every generation and are unique and worth preserving in the coming times also
- Are there any historical monuments in Bhaderwah that hold significant importance? Could you provide some examples and shed light on their historical significance?
Ans.3: Bhaderwah has a rich heritage also. Bhaderwah fort also known as "Qilla" is a significant cultural and historical landmark of Bhaderwah. It is a built heritage. It is located on the top of a small hillock with a picturesque backdrop of pine forest.
One can see a whole view of Bhaderwah valley from there. Built in 18th & 19th century, this fort has a unique architecture and reflects the Dogra and Chamba architecture. Besides this there is Gupt Ganga Temple, a beautiful ancient temple of lord Shiva on the bank of river Neeru. It is of great historical and religious importance.
There is a cave inside the temple called as Gupt Ganga temple built by Pandavas during their Agyaatvasa whose exit is believed to be in Mattan in Kashmir. Then comes Jamia Masjid Bhaderwah, located in the heart of Bhaderwah town, built in 20th century, it has a unique architecture and beautiful external view.
- Bhaderwah is often praised for its communal harmony. How has the town managed to maintain such harmony and are there any notable examples or initiatives that promote unity among different communities?
Ans.4: Yes, indeed Bhaderwah is known for its communal harmony. Going by the Census data, there is almost equal population of Hindus and Muslim community. As I said earlier, people of Bhaderwah has always embraced cultural and religious diversity. Each morning the daylight begins, one can hear the recitations in Masjid and ringing of temple bells simultaneously.
People respect each otherâs religious sentiments and participate in each other's religious festivals as one community. I have grown up in Bhaderwah among each community where our family friends were mostly from Hindu community and believe me it was like a small family of beautiful people.
- What are some popular tourist spots in Bhaderwah that attract visitors from near and far? Could you highlight a few and describe their appeal?
Ans.5: There are numerous touristsâ attractions in Bhaderwah. Starting from the highway connecting Jammu to Bhaderwah is :-
1) Khellani - It is deodar clad plateau, beautiful and picturesque. It is a good tourist attraction. Tree houses are built there. A good spot for picnic.
2) Jai Valley - Beautiful sprawling meadow surrounded by thick deodars, is one of the most visited tourist spot in Bhaderwah. It is ideal for camping and mountaineering activities.
3) Padri Valley - Panoramic and awe -inspiring Padri plateau is a heavenly experience for tourists. Its enthralling beauty catches everyone's attention. Valley appears to be a green carpet with wild flowers and grasses. Besides the abundant natural beauty, this place also offers paragliding and snow skiing in winters.
4) Gul Danda & Chatargalla Pass, Thanthera - Located on Bani- Bhaderwah road, these places are magnificent beyond imagination. Thick forest vegetation, pristine environment, lush green meadows, one is mesmerized to the soul in these places.
5) Seoj Dhar - It is one of the most beautiful place in Jammu and Kashmir. Snow covered Kailash range with gushing river on one side will let loose one's heart in seconds making it impossible for the visitors to leave. It is a feast to eyes. It is beautiful place for camping and trekking also.
6) Nalthi - It is a nearby place to Bhaderwah with beautiful small spots on the river side and tall trees for the people to picnic and relax.
7) Other tourist spots are lake view resort Gatha, Chandi Mata Temple, Chinta Valley, Gupt Ganga Temple, Tilli Garh, Hanga, Bhaderwah Fort etc. All these places offers beauty, freshness, calm and nature at its best.
- How would you assess the state of education and literacy in Bhaderwah? Are there any initiatives or programs in place to improve educational opportunities for the local population?
Ans.6: Bhaderwah used to be called as Kerala of J&K for its literacy rate as compared to many other places. Early degree colleges and institutions were established in Bhaderwah also. As far as education is concerned people of Bhaderwah has been hard working always.
In previous times, even with limited resources available, students have achieved phenomenal success in every career be it administration, police, higher education, Medical & Engineering professionals etc. Most of the people are associated with Education Department.
Teaching fraternity has always been very serious when it comes to discharge of duties. As education is a very sensitive area which should progress at a greater pace with progressing times, more opportunities and accessibility needs to be there for students to compete at the greater platform for which many efforts and actions are in place and will eventually be maximized in coming times.
- What is the status of women empowerment in Bhaderwah? Are there any notable initiatives or organizations working towards empowering women and promoting gender equality?
Ans.7: Women folk off Bhaderwah are resilient, hard working, self made and courageous. Barring few conservative sections, women are empowered by the families and society in general. Affirmative actions and schemes for women existing in other parts of UT exist there also but as I always say empowerment of women is a very broad concept and a lot has to be done yet.
