Dr Sharmeen Mushtaq Nizamiexclusive interviewJAMMU: In an exclusive online interview conducted by Ajmer Alam Wani, the Editor-in-Chief of JK Monitor (www.jkmonitor.org), Dr. Sharmeen Mushtaq Nizami, a multifaceted individual with a thriving medical career, fervor for off-road driving, and a commitment to social activism, shared her remarkable journey as the first woman off-road driver of Kashmir. Her story not only redefines gender roles but also serves as an inspiration for young women aspiring to conquer unconventional fields while excelling in their chosen professions.

BREAKING GENDER BARRIERS: Dr. Sharmeen Mushtaq Nizami, a proud club member at Kashmir Off Road, a prominent Motorsport Club in Srinagar, made history by becoming the first woman off-road driver in the region. Her trailblazing journey began when she participated in the "Big Frozen Rush 2" event in 2019, a snow race that challenged her skills and determination. Amongst 50 participants, she stood as the sole female contender, drawing the attention of all.

For Dr. Nizami, the outcome of the race mattered less than her participation and completion of the race, which she attributed to the grace of Allah. Her entry into the world of off-road driving was sparked by a childhood love for challenges and the influence of her father, a sportsman, and a Jeep enthusiast. This passion led her to discover Kashmir Off Road through social media, propelling her towards adventure sports.

CHALLENGING MINDSETS: As a firm believer in the power of breaking stereotypes, Dr. Nizami emphasized that she could not singlehandedly promote motorsport among women. Instead, her mission was to change the mindset of those who doubted women's driving abilities. To her, driving is a skill that anyone can master with practice, devoid of gender discrimination.

While being a woman in a male-dominated field, Dr. Nizami received unwavering support from her family, friends, and fellow club members. Her only concern was the lack of confidence people had in female drivers, a mindset she was determined to change through her efforts, confidence, and skills.

BALANCING PASSIONS: With a demanding medical profession, family responsibilities, and a passion for off-road driving, Dr. Nizami emphasized the importance of time management. While most off-road events occurred on Sundays, balancing her duties and her off-road adventures was not a challenge. However, the current absence of active off-road activities in the club due to expeditions posed a scheduling obstacle.

PREPAREDNESS AND RESPONSIBILITY: Dr. Nizami's medical background played a crucial role in her approach to off-road driving. She stressed the need for preparedness during off-road events, citing the inherent risks associated with adventure sports. Their team always carries first-aid kits, wears helmets, and seatbelts, with a dedicated medical team ready for emergencies.

ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS OFF-ROADING: Responsible off-road driving is a priority for Dr. Nizami and her fellow enthusiasts. They ensure minimal environmental impact by regularly maintaining their vehicles, adhering to designated trails, and packing out their trash, taking their love for adventure hand-in-hand with respect for nature.

ASPIRATIONS AND ACTIVISM: Looking ahead, Dr. Nizami aspires to gain government recognition for motorsports in Jammu and Kashmir, enabling young enthusiasts to receive proper training and pursue it as a career.

As a social activist, she established the Trust-ARI Foundation, Al Hajira Baitulmal, to assist destitute patients, widows, and orphans, reflecting her commitment to making a difference in society as a doctor, healer, and counselor.

In a resounding message to all young women with unconventional dreams, Dr. Sharmeen Mushtaq Nizami declares, "You are beautiful, you are unique, you are strong, and you have the power which can never be taken from you—that is the strength of your soul. Believe in yourself, don't get disappointed easily, seek the right opportunity, follow your passions and goals, invest sincere hard work, and prove wrong those who underestimate you. Let your success be the ultimate answer."
