JAMMU: The Central University of Jammu, through its Satish Dhawan Centre for Space Science (SDCSS), will organise a two-day capacity-building workshop on “Indigenous Space Technology for Viksit Bharat 2047: Mission Excellence to Space Leadership” on October 27–28, 2026. The workshop is being organised under the broad theme of “Hon’ble Prime Minister’s 25 Years of Public Service and Dedication.”

The workshop aims to bring together experts from the space sector, government, industry and academia to deliberate on India’s remarkable transformation in space technology, the development of indigenous capabilities and the country’s aspirations for global leadership in space science and technology. The deliberations will focus on how technological self-reliance, strategic leadership, institutional reforms and innovation can contribute to the national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.

The inaugural function will be held at 10:00 a.m. on October 27, 2026, at the Auditorium, Aryabhatta Bhawan, Central University of Jammu. Dr. R. Balasubramaniam, Member, NITI Aayog, Government of India, will be the Chief Guest and Keynote Speaker. Ms. Deepti Gaur Mukerjee, IAS, Secretary, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India, and Shri Anandrao V. Patil, IAS, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Education, Government of India, will attend as Guests of Honour. Prof. Sanjeev Jain, Vice-Chancellor, Central University of Jammu, is the nodal officer for the workshop.

The two-day programme will feature eight thematic sessions covering India’s journey towards technological self-reliance, strategic leadership in the space sector, the expanding role of private enterprises and start-ups, human spaceflight, space diplomacy, disaster management, industry–academia collaboration and skill development for the emerging space economy. The sessions will provide a platform to explore how indigenous technologies and institutional partnerships can strengthen India’s position in the global space ecosystem.

A significant focus of the workshop will be the application of space technology to developmental priorities, including agriculture, fisheries, climate observation, disaster preparedness and water-resource management. These applications are particularly relevant to Jammu and Kashmir and the wider Himalayan region, where satellite-based observation and geospatial technologies can support the monitoring of glaciers, floods, landslides, forest fires and other climate-related risks.

The Satish Dhawan Centre for Space Science at the Central University of Jammu provides an institutional platform for research, teaching and capacity building in space science and its applications. Established following a Memorandum of Understanding between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the University in October 2018, the Centre was inaugurated in March 2022. Its research and academic activities span geospatial data analysis, atmospheric sensing, glacier studies, astrophysics, materials science for space sensors, avionics and disaster management.

The workshop also seeks to strengthen the role of universities and research institutions in India’s expanding space ecosystem. Through discussions on industry–academia partnerships, research collaboration, student projects, innovation and emerging career opportunities, the programme will highlight the importance of developing skilled human resources to meet the evolving demands of the space sector.

Among its expected outcomes, the workshop aims to generate case studies on leadership, institutional reforms, space missions, developmental applications and emerging space enterprises. These knowledge resources are expected to support teaching, research and public-sector capacity building. The University also envisages follow-up academic engagements, including a proposed three-day international conference in April 2027 and a one-week summer school in May 2027.

By bringing together policymakers, scientists, industry representatives and academicians, the Central University of Jammu seeks to promote informed dialogue on India’s transformation in the space sector and the contribution of indigenous technological capabilities to national development.
