JAMMU, VIJAYPUR: The demand to send senior Congress leader Yashpal Kundal—a two-time former MLA, former Minister, and current Pradesh Vice President—to the Rajya Sabha is gaining momentum in the Jammu division.
Recently, the terms of several Rajya Sabha members, including Mir Mohammad Fayaz, Shamsher Singh, Ghulam Nabi Azad, and Nazir Ahmed Laway, came to an end. In view of these vacancies, the Election Commission of India has announced biennial elections for four Rajya Sabha seats from the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
Yashpal Kundal is a prominent representative of the Scheduled Caste (SC) community in the Jammu division and is considered one of the leading SC leaders in the region. Locals point out that no party has ever sent an SC leader from Jammu to the Rajya Sabha, which many see as a long-standing oversight of the community.
Senior SC leaders and local representatives, including Sarpanch Krishan Chand, Dr. Mohan Lal, Satpal, and retired Sub-Inspector Rampal, have actively voiced their demand that Congress should respect the sentiments of the community. They emphasize that Kundal not only has significant political experience but also understands the real issues and needs of the SC community.
The SC leadership has stressed that this is a historic opportunity for any political party to demonstrate its commitment to social justice and equitable representation. If Congress nominates Yashpal Kundal, it would be a landmark and inspiring move for the SC community. Community elders also believe that the active participation and support of the SC society in the upcoming elections could play a decisive role for the Congress party.
