JAMMU: The Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu, successfully organized an expert lecture on the topic “Empowering Women through Financial Literacy” today for the faculty, scholars, and students of various departments of the University. 

The lecture was delivered by Prof. Felix Ofusu Djan, Chancellor, Webbic University, South Africa (Ghana). The programme aimed to spread awareness about the importance of financial literacy in empowering women to achieve independence, make informed financial decisions, and actively participate in economic activities.

Prof. Felix Ofusu Djan, the expert speaker of the programme, emphasized that financial literacy is a powerful tool that enables women to make informed decisions, secure their future, and contribute meaningfully to their families and society. Through storytelling, he highlighted practical strategies for managing personal finances, understanding banking services, and exploring investment opportunities. He also provided detailed insights into essential financial skills such as budgeting, saving, investing, and effective money management.

Adding depth to the discussion, Prof. Djan presented a comparative analysis of financial literacy and women’s empowerment in India and Ghana. The analysis shed light on similarities and differences in financial inclusion, access to banking services, and the socio-economic challenges faced by women in both countries. This comparative perspective offered valuable global insights and broadened the participants’ understanding of the subject.

Earlier, Prof. Savita Nayyar, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies, in her welcome address extended heartfelt greetings to the esteemed guest and participants.  She expressed gratitude for the enthusiastic presence of attendees and emphasized the significance of organizing such awareness lectures. Introducing the theme, “Empowering Women through Financial Literacy,” she highlighted the crucial role financial awareness plays in strengthening women’s independence and decision-making capabilities. She stressed that, in today’s rapidly evolving economic landscape, equipping women with financial knowledge is essential not only for personal growth but also for the overall development of society.

A large number of participants actively engaged in the session, gaining valuable insights into financial planning and the importance of economic self-reliance. The interactive discussion addressed common financial challenges faced by women and offered practical solutions to overcome them. Dr. H.R. Rehman, Chairperson, and Dr. Narender, Director, both from GHRT, also attended the programme.

Dr. Disha Sharma coordinated and conducted the proceedings of the programme, while Dr. Saranjit Kaur presented the formal vote of thanks. Both are faculty members at the Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu.
