JAMMU: The Law School, University of Jammu, continuing its commitment to bridging doctrinal legal education with the pragmatics of adjudicative practice, organized an immersive court visit for its sixth-semester students. The visit was thoughtfully designed to integrate procedural jurisprudence, substantive law, and legal skills training, thereby offering participants a comprehensive understanding of both criminal and civil justice administration through the lens of law in action.
The highlight of the visit was an engaging session with Shri R.N. Watal, Principal District and Sessions Judge, Jammu. Emphasizing the deontological foundations of the legal profession, he underscored honesty, integrity, and hard work as non-negotiable normative cornerstones of legal excellence. He further urged future lawyers not merely to follow black-letter law, but to appreciate the sociology of law and the realist critique of legal formalism, encouraging them to examine law as a lived social phenomenon.
Commenting on the visit, Prof. (Dr.) Seema Rohmetra, Director, The Law School, said, “At The Law School, we firmly believe that the future of legal education lies in experiential learning. Classroom instruction provides the normative foundation, but it is in the courtrooms, through direct observation and hermeneutic engagement with the judicial process, that legal theory truly transforms into applied wisdom. This visit is a testament to our pedagogy, which aims to mould not just law graduates, but practice-ready advocates equipped with both epistemic knowledge and the practical reason to apply it effectively.”
Students also had the opportunity to interact with distinguished alumni of The Law School, including Shafiq Mushtaq Lone, Additional Mobile Magistrate (Traffic), Jammu, and Advocates Anuj Malhotra, Snigdha Shekhar, Sushant Samnotra, Jhanvi, and Rahul Aggarwal. The visit was coordinated by Dr. Rajneesh Khajuria, Assistant Professor, and supported by faculty members Dr. Ramesh Kumar, Dr. Rubia Jalal, and Dr. Nitan Sharma.
