KISHTWAR: The Chenab Times Foundation has extended its support to the growing demand for free electricity for the residents of Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban districts, citing the environmental and social costs of the numerous hydroelectric projects in the region. Maryam Begum, Chairperson of the Chenab Times Foundation, emphasized the long-standing sacrifices made by the people of the Chenab Valley due to the large-scale power projects on the Chenab River, which have led to environmental degradation, increased seismic activity, water pollution, and noise pollution.
"The people of Kishtwar, Doda, and Ramban have endured the burden of these hydroelectric projects for decades, facing displacement, natural disasters, and ecological damage. While electricity generated here powers other parts of India, local residents are left struggling with the consequences. It is only fair that they receive free electricity as compensation for their suffering," she said.
Begum also appreciated the youth of Kishtwar for raising their voices through the "Mission Bijli Free" agitation, which has gained significant momentum in recent weeks. "The youth of Kishtwar are leading an important struggle, and their demand is not just for their district but for the entire Chenab region. Every resident here deserves free electricity," she added.
Environmental experts have previously warned about the increased seismic risks posed by continuous tunneling and blasting for hydroelectric projects in the region. The Chenab Valley has experienced a rise in earthquakes and landslides, further intensifying concerns about the long-term impact of these projects. With the demand for free electricity gaining support from multiple stakeholders, including civil society groups and political representatives, the movement is expected to intensify in the coming days.
