JAMMU: The Department of Commerce, University of Jammu, organised a comprehensive Four-Day Orientation Programme for newly admitted postgraduate students as part of the University’s induction activities for the academic session 2026. The programme was organised under the guidance of Prof. Jeevan Jyoti, Head, Department of Commerce, with Dr. Sakshi Sharma as Programme Coordinator and Dr. Sunil Kumar as Co-Coordinator.
The programme aimed to familiarise students with the academic and institutional environment, introduce them to faculty members and University facilities, and encourage their active participation in sports, cultural activities, student clubs and other co-curricular engagements.
Day 1: Department-Level Orientation
The first day of the programme was held at the Department of Commerce. The newly admitted students were warmly welcomed and familiarised with the Department and its academic environment. The programme commenced with the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan Pledge, wherein the students enthusiastically reaffirmed their commitment towards building a drug-free society.
This was followed by an institutional orientation covering the vision and mission of the Department, academic framework, examination system, departmental functioning, facilities and various opportunities available to students.
Addressing the students, Prof. Jeevan Jyoti, Head, Department of Commerce, welcomed the new batch and encouraged them to make the most of the opportunities available at the University of Jammu. She emphasised the importance of holistic development, continuous learning and active participation in academic and co-curricular activities.
The students were introduced to the faculty members of the Department and acquainted with their respective mentors under the Department’s mentoring system, providing them with academic and personal support throughout their university journey. Various interactive activities were also conducted to create a positive and welcoming environment for the students.
An informative session on Human Values and Ethics was conducted by Mrs. Swati Basotra, Corporate Trainer, who highlighted the importance of integrity, discipline, responsibility and ethical behaviour in academic as well as professional life.
The session was followed by an interaction with distinguished departmental alumna Mrs. Deepshikha Sharma, KAS, Joint Director, Divisional Funds Organisation, Jammu. She shared her academic journey, professional experiences and valuable insights with the students, motivating them to pursue excellence in both academic and professional spheres. The day also included sessions on Professional Ethics, Universal Human Values and the Institutional Code of Conduct, emphasising the importance of responsible and ethical conduct.
The formal vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Sakshi Sharma. The faculty members present on the occasion included Prof. Gurjeet Kaur, Prof. Jyoti Sharma, Prof. Tarsem Lal, Dr. Sunil Kumar and Dr. Harleen Kaur, who warmly welcomed the students to their academic journey at the Department of Commerce.
Day 2: University Facilities and Sports Activities
The second day focused on familiarising students with the University’s important central facilities and resources. The students visited the Central Library, Health Centre, Botanical Garden/Cactus Garden, Art Gallery/Museum and JU-FM Dhwani/Green Initiatives. The visits provided them an opportunity to understand the University’s infrastructure and the facilities available for their academic and overall development.
The day also featured a range of sports activities organised under the Directorate of Sports & Physical Education. The students participated in athletics, football, hockey, cricket, badminton, basketball, volleyball, kho-kho, kabaddi, table tennis, archery, wrestling, gym and fitness activities, boxing, fencing and yoga. The activities promoted teamwork, discipline, physical fitness and interaction among the students.
Day 3: Experiential Learning and Cultural Engagement
The third day began at the School of Hospitality and Tourism, where the students participated in a Calico-printing activity organised by the Heritage and Tourism Club. The hands-on activity introduced students to creative and practical skills while providing them an opportunity to engage with traditional art and craft techniques.
The second half of the day was conducted at the Brig. Rajinder Singh Auditorium, where students were introduced to the vibrant cultural environment of the University through activities and performances organised by various student clubs. The Music Club, Dance Club, Literacy Club and other clubs showcased their activities and talents, encouraging students to explore their creative interests and actively participate in the University’s co-curricular ecosystem.
Day 4: Student Clubs and Co-Curricular Orientation
The fourth and concluding day of the programme focused on the wide range of student clubs and co-curricular opportunities available at the University. The orientation was conducted at the Department of Statistics, where the students were introduced to various clubs, including the Science Club, Nature and Wildlife Club, Photography Club and other student clubs.
The respective club coordinators interacted with the students and briefed them about the objectives, activities, functioning and opportunities associated with their respective clubs. The session encouraged students to identify their areas of interest and actively participate in co-curricular activities alongside their academic pursuits. It also highlighted the role of such activities in developing creativity, communication skills, teamwork, leadership and confidence.
The Four-Day Orientation Programme concluded on an enthusiastic and engaging note, providing the newly admitted students with a holistic introduction to university life. Through a blend of academic orientation, mentoring, alumni interaction, institutional awareness, experiential learning, sports, cultural activities and club engagement, the programme sought to prepare the students for a meaningful and enriching journey at the University of Jammu.
The Department of Commerce expressed its gratitude to the University administration, faculty members, guest speakers, club coordinators, student volunteers and all those associated with the successful organisation of the programme.
