JAMMU: The Indian Institute of Management Jammu (IIM Jammu) observed Vigilance Awareness Week 2026 by organizing an awareness session on “Preventive Vigilance and PIDPI (Public Interest Disclosure and Protection of Informers).” The session was delivered by Prof. Debasis Satapathy, Senior Consultant, IIM Jammu, who highlighted the importance of integrity, transparency, accountability and ethical conduct in institutional functioning.

Shri Shailesh K. Lohiya, Librarian and Officiating Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), IIM Jammu, welcomed the gathering and introduced Prof. Satapathy. He noted the relevance of the session’s focus on management lessons from the Mahabharata and their application to ethics, integrity and preventive vigilance in contemporary administrative practices.

As part of the programme, IIM Jammu employees and students collectively took the Vigilance Pledge in English and Hindi, reaffirming their commitment to integrity, transparency, accountability and the prevention of corruption in institutional and public life.

The session examined how preventive vigilance can help foster a culture of integrity and reduce the scope for misconduct through greater awareness, sound procedures and responsible decision-making. Prof. Satapathy also explained the relevance of the Public Interest Disclosure and Protection of Informers (PIDPI) framework in encouraging the reporting of corruption and wrongdoing while safeguarding informers’ identities in accordance with applicable provisions.

Drawing on practical management lessons from the Mahabharata, Prof. Satapathy discussed the continuing relevance of ethics, integrity, accountability and preventive vigilance in modern administrative practice. Referring to episodes including the Virata Yuddha and the roles of Lord Krishna and Abhimanyu, he connected the epic’s teachings with ethical decision-making, moral courage, strategic foresight and the consequences of action and inaction. He explained how Lord Krishna’s guidance offers insights into anticipating challenges, addressing vulnerabilities and preventing adverse outcomes, drawing parallels with preventive vigilance in modern organizations.

Emphasizing institutional responsibility, Prof. Satapathy said that the interests of IIM Jammu must remain paramount for every employee, and that integrity and ethical conduct should form the foundation of professional behaviour. He underscored the need for judicious use of public funds contributed by taxpayers, particularly funds allocated to establish and support institutions such as IITs and IIMs.

He highlighted the importance of transparent administrative procedures, quality-based selection criteria and due diligence in local purchase committee processes to reduce the scope for corruption, irregularities and misuse of authority. He further stressed that ethical values must be reflected in employees’ character, conduct and professional dealings, and that institutional interests must take precedence over personal considerations.

The session also underscored the role of collective vigilance, accountability and transparency in building an ethical institutional culture. Participants were sensitized to the importance of reporting corruption and irregularities through appropriate channels, including the PIDPI framework. Prof. Satapathy emphasized that preventive vigilance extends beyond detecting misconduct: it also involves identifying potential risks, strengthening systems and safeguards, and encouraging every employee to contribute to the prevention of wrongdoing.

The discussion concluded by emphasizing the need to translate the Mahabharata’s enduring management lessons into responsible administrative practices, ethical decision-making and a shared commitment to institutional integrity. It reinforced that vigilance involves proactively preventing irregularities through ethical conduct, due diligence and collective responsibility, while ensuring transparency in official procedures and protecting informers in accordance with applicable provisions.

Through such initiatives, IIM Jammu reiterated its commitment to strengthening ethical governance, promoting institutional accountability and nurturing a workplace culture grounded in integrity and public trust. The observance of Vigilance Awareness Week serves as a reminder that vigilance is a shared responsibility and that ethical conduct must remain integral to every aspect of institutional functioning.
