SAMBA: Farmers in Vijaypur observed the martyrdom day of two farmers who lost their lives in police firing during a peaceful protest in the town on August 28, 1991.The two farmers, Sardar Puran Singh, a resident of Dadyial village in Ramgarh, and Ramesh Lal, a resident of Vijaypur, were participating in a peaceful protest by farmers when the police opened fire, resulting in their deaths.
The incident sparked widespread condemnation as the farmers were protesting peacefully in support of their genuine demands, including adequate canal water for irrigation to the tail-end border villages, electricity bill waivers, and other related issues.To mark the occasion, participants took out a march from Vijaypur Gurudwara to the martyr site in memory of the two farmers.
Speaking on the occasion, Apni Partyâs Provincial President, Jammu, and former Minister, S. Manjit Singh, remembered the struggles faced by farmers even today, saying they continue to grapple with issues related to irrigation, unscheduled power cuts, inflated electricity bills, KCC loans, inadequate development, and lack of remunerative prices for their crops in the markets.He said the proposed 7 per cent hike in electricity tariffs would impose an additional financial burden on farmers and middle-class families.
âThe decision should not be imposed on the people of Jammu and Kashmir, who had sought relief from the elected government and expected it to provide them relief,â he said.He also demanded that farmersâ issues be addressed on humanitarian grounds and that Minimum Support Price (MSP) be ensured for their produce in the market.
Prominent among those who participated in the programme were Apni Party Provincial Spokesperson Adv. Sahil Bharti, District President Samba, Raman Thappa, Sardar Manmohan Singh, Ex-Sarpanch Capt. Joginder Lal, Block President, Vijaypur, Ex-Capt Mohan Lal Sharma, Ex-Sarpanch Sham Lal, Ashok Bhagat, Sardar Mohan Singh, President Beopar Mandal Vijaypur, Bharat Bushan, Youth President Samba, Mangat Ram, son of martyr Subedar Joginder Singh, and other prominent people.
