In loving memory of Dr. Priya Ranjan: A mentor who treated me like family

JAMMU: Senior BJP leader Raman Suri has strongly criticised former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s statement on the detention of terrorists, saying it has not only hurt the sentiments of lakhs of Kashmiri Pandits but also undermined the relentless efforts of Jammu Kashmir Police to eliminate terrorists, deliver justice and establish lasting peace and prosperity in the Union Territory (UT).

Suri said it was deeply concerning that a political leader who has held the highest elected office in Jammu Kashmir, in her tweet on platform X, appeared to be questioning police action against individuals with a history of terrorism. He said the police are working under challenging circumstances to track down terrorists, absconders, investigate crimes and bring offenders to justice.

“If the police are expected to trace terrorists and ensure that they face the consequences of their actions, how can those who waged war against India, killed innocent people and contributed to years of bloodshed and unrest be treated as beyond scrutiny?” he asked.

He said such statements were dangerous because they risk creating sympathy for terrorists and undermining the morale of security personnel who have made enormous sacrifices in the fight against terrorism. “The suffering of Kashmiri Pandits, who were forced to leave their homeland after facing terror, threats and targeted killings, cannot be brushed aside. Any political narrative that appears to minimise the gravity of terrorism is bound to reopen old wounds and hurt thousands of families who are still waiting for justice,” Suri said.

The BJP leader added that attempts to justify or defend individuals associated with terrorism, without acknowledging the suffering of terrorism’s victims, send a deeply disturbing message to society. He said Jammu Kashmir needs responsible leadership that stands firmly with the Constitution, the rule of law and the families who have suffered because of terrorism.

Referring to the demand for restoration of statehood, Suri urged the Central Government to take such statements of the former chief minister into notice before deciding on it. He said statehood should be considered only when the security situation is firmly under control and those responsible for terrorism, along with their support networks, have been brought to justice in accordance with the law.

“One must seriously consider the consequences if leaders who appear sympathetic to the concerns of terrorists are entrusted with greater political authority while the security challenge remains unresolved. The priority must be the safety of citizens, justice for victims and the complete dismantling of the ecosystem that sustains terrorism,” he said. He also said that the concerns raised over the detention of former terrorists from Ratnipora in Pulwama, reportedly in their sixties and now grandfathers, holds no ground as many such persons must still be paddling a narrative to poison the society or misguide youngsters.

“Jammu and Kashmir deserves peace, but peace cannot be built by forgetting the victims of terrorism or by weakening accountability. Our objective must be a secure, peaceful and prosperous Jammu Kashmir where innocent citizens feel protected, victims receive justice and nobody is above the law,” Suri said.
