JAMMU: Reaffirming its commitment to rejuvenating traditional water bodies and strengthening water conservation infrastructure across Jammu city, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) today launched a ₹66.52 lakh pond restoration project at Sector-F, near the Railway Crossing in Sainik Colony, Ward No. 70, under the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ (SHS) Campaign 2026. MLA Jammu South Dr. Narinder Singh laid the foundation stone for the project.

The programme was attended by Joint Commissioner (Works), senior officers of the Corporation, former Deputy Mayor, former councillors and a large number of local residents.

The pond, presently in a neglected and dilapidated condition, has accumulated weeds, silt, sludge and solid waste, adversely affecting its water-holding capacity and the surrounding environment. The comprehensive restoration works will include cleaning and desilting, earthwork and re-profiling, dewatering and water management, strengthening of embankments through PCC walls and stone pitching, construction of an RCC filtration chamber, installation of GI chain-link fencing to ensure safety and prevent encroachment, surface finishing and provision of solar lighting.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Narinder Singh highlighted the importance of preserving traditional water bodies as vital environmental and community assets. He said that ponds not only support rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge, but also contribute to ecological balance and sustainable urban development. He appreciated the JMC initiative and said that the restoration of the pond would provide residents with a cleaner and safer environment while strengthening the water conservation infrastructure of Sainik Colony.

He further said that the ongoing development of Sainik Colony is being undertaken with emphasis on cleanliness, water conservation, roads and green spaces. The restored pond, he added, would transform a neglected site into a sustainable public asset and serve as an example for the rejuvenation of similar water bodies in other parts of the city.

The initiative is in line with JMC’s broader vision of “Clean Ponds, Healthy Cities”, aimed at restoring urban water bodies, improving water retention and recharge and creating cleaner and more environmentally sustainable neighbourhoods. Local residents welcomed the project and assured their cooperation in maintaining the cleanliness, safety and upkeep of the pond after its restoration.
