JAMMU: The Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu, successfully organized a Gender Sensitization Workshop for ICDS Anganwadi Workers and Supervisors today at Kot Bhalwal, Jammu, with the aim of strengthening gender awareness and enhancing the capacity of frontline workers to address gender-based concerns in their communities.

The session was conducted by Prof. Savita Nayyar, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies, who served as the Resource Person for the workshop. In her lecture, Prof. Nayyar discussed key themes such as the concept of gender, socialization and stereotypes, and the legal rights and protections available for women and children. She also provided deep insights into issues such as domestic violence and sexual harassment, and highlighted the reporting mechanisms and legal safeguards available to address these concerns.

While interacting with the participants, she emphasized the crucial role of Anganwadi workers in community engagement and early intervention. She said that Anganwadi workers serve as an essential link between the community and institutional support systems; therefore, strengthening their understanding of gender issues is vital for fostering safe, inclusive, and supportive environments for women and children.

The workshop included discussions, case studies, and participatory activities that encouraged participants to reflect on their personal experiences and develop practical strategies for addressing gender-based challenges.

More than 80 Anganwadi Workers and Supervisors from various blocks of the ICDS project participated in the programme. The workshop focused on empowering them with knowledge and skills to identify gender-based discrimination, support women and children in distress, and promote gender-equitable practices at the grassroots level. The participants enthusiastically shared their experiences and observations as well.

The workshop was conducted under the able guidance of Prof. Savita Nayyar, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies, and Mr. Mohit Bharti, CDPO, Kot Bhalwal. It was coordinated by Dr. Saranjit Kaur, Faculty, Centre for Women’s Studies, and Ms. Renu, Supervisor, ICDS Department. The formal vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Disha Sharma, Faculty, Centre for Women’s Studies, University of Jammu.
