Central University of Kashmir’s ICC holds ‘Awareness Walk’ to promote women’s rights

GANDERBAL: In the lead-up to International Women’s Day, the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) of the Central University of Kashmir (CUKashmir) organized an ‘Awareness Walk’ at the Science Campus, Nunar, here on Thursday.

Addressing the gathering, Vice Chancellor Prof. A. Ravinder Nath emphasized that the initiative serves as a powerful platform to advocate for women’s safety, dignity, and rights. “The ICC plays a pivotal role in ensuring a safe and inclusive environment by addressing workplace harassment and gender-based inequalities. This walk seeks to spread awareness, educate individuals about their rights, and highlight the collective responsibility of creating an equitable society,” he remarked.

Prof. Nath further stated that women’s active participation is crucial for India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047. “A truly Viksit Bharat—prosperous, equitable, and progressive—can only be realized when women are empowered as equal partners in progress. As architects of change, they shape a just and harmonious world, proving that no civilization can thrive without their contributions.”

ICC Chairperson and Dean of International Affairs, Prof. Sandhya Tiwari, emphasized that the initiative aims to raise awareness about how women instill morals, traditions, and education within families, institutions and societies. She stressed the need to respect women’s rights, promote gender sensitivity, and inspire action against discrimination. She said, the messages displayed on the placards conveyed through this walk encourage individuals to take a proactive stance against gender-based violence and inequality,” she stated. She further highlighted the indispensable role of women in economic growth, from entrepreneurship to corporate leadership, fostering innovation and development.

Dean of the School of Life Sciences, Prof. Abid Hamid Dar, spoke on the influence of women in shaping future generations. “Women play a lead role in STEM and every other walk of life. As teachers, doctors, and social workers, they contribute significantly to the intellectual and emotional well-being of society. Their leadership in governance, politics, and business ensures balanced decision-making and inclusive progress,” he added.

Dean of the School of Physical and Chemical Sciences, Prof. Muhammad Yousuf, reiterated the significance of gender equality, stating that societies flourish when women are empowered, educated, and provided with equal opportunities. “Women have always been the foundation and architects of society, shaping its values, culture, and progress. As nurturers, educators, and leaders, they play a crucial role in strengthening communities and driving social change,” he said.

Holding banners, placards, and posters advocating gender equality and women’s rights, the participants later took out a march around the area, engaging with local women and fostering dialogue on the importance of an inclusive and just society.
