JAMMU: The Central University of Jammu in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts  organised a celebration to mark Partition Horrors Remembrance Day under the leadership of Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. Sanjeev Jain. The programme aimed to honour the memory of millions who endured the tragic events of the Partition of India in 1947, highlighting the resilience, courage, and unity that emerged from one of the most challenging chapters in the nation’s history.

The event commenced with the display of an E-Exhibition featuring rare visuals and historical archives. This unique exhibition offered a poignant glimpse into the lives, struggles, and endurance of those who lived through the Partition, reminding attendees that history speaks not only through words but also through images that touch the soul.

This was followed by the Lamp Lighting Ceremony and the formal welcome address by Prof. Ritu Bakshi, Dean Students’ Welfare, Central University of Jammu, who set the tone for the day’s proceedings. She spoke about the human tragedy of Partition, which displaced millions and left scars across generations, and emphasised the importance of reaffirming our collective commitment towards peace, unity, and compassion.

A skit depicting the experiences and hardships associated with Partition was also presented during the programme. The performance sensitised the audience to the human suffering and emotional trauma associated with displacement while highlighting the courage and resilience of those who rebuilt their lives in the aftermath of Partition.

The Chief Guest, Dr. Deepak Kapoor, Retd. Deputy Director Health and President, POJK Visthapit Sewa Samiti, addressed the gathering and reflected on the experiences of people affected by Partition. Prof. Sanjeev Jain, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Central University of Jammu, in his presidential address, reflected on the experiences and suffering of people who endured the Partition. He emphasised the importance of discussing and remembering Partition so that the younger generation can understand what happened in the past and critically reflect on its consequences. He urged the audience to learn from the experiences of those who suffered and to examine the factors and circumstances that contributed to the Partition, drawing meaningful lessons for the future. Prof. Jain emphasised that such reflection becomes particularly important as the responsibility of the country’s future increasingly rests with the youth. He called upon students to actively engage with history, participate meaningfully in discussions on national issues, and contribute towards the well-being, unity, and progress of the nation.

Prof. Yashwant Singh, Registrar, CU Jammu, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing deep gratitude to all dignitaries, participants, and organisers for their contributions to the celebration.
