DC Srinagar, SSP review anti-drug measures in District NCORD meeting

• Emphasis on intensified, coordinated enforcement & stronger rehabilitation

SRINAGAR: Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar, Akshay Labroo, today chaired a comprehensive meeting of the District-Level NCORD Committee at the Meeting Hall of the DC Office to review and strengthen district’s strategy the measures being undertaken to combat drug trafficking and substance abuse in the district. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar, Dr. G.V. Sundeep Chakravarthy, also attended the meeting.

The meeting held detailed discussions on enforcement, prevention and rehabilitation, with emphasis on dismantling narcotics networks, strengthening action under the NDPS and PITNDPS Acts, effective implementation of the Common SOP for action against accused persons, implementation of the nationwide 100 Weeks Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, maintaining zero tolerance towards Government employees involved in NDPS cases, and strengthening rehabilitation measures for drug victims.

While reviewing the implementation of nationwide 100 Weeks Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, the Deputy Commissioner directed all concerned Departments to submit their detailed activity plans for the campaign. He stressed the need for sustained awareness and preventive interventions, particularly among youth and vulnerable sections, to strengthen the collective fight against drug abuse.

The DC also reviewed rehabilitation measures and emphasized effective implementation of the proposed rehabilitation policy, being implemented on pilot basis in selected Districts of Jammu and Kashmir, including Srinagar. He called for strengthening rehabilitation, counselling, follow-up and aftercare mechanisms for drug victims to facilitate their recovery and reintegration into society.

The DC also stressed the enrolment of rehabilitation cases, aimed at ensuring better tracking of beneficiaries, timely interventions and improved coordination among departments and rehabilitation institutions. Emphasizing the coordinated approach, the DC called upon all stakeholder Departments to intensify joint efforts, strengthen information sharing and surveillance and ensure effective implementation of anti-drug measures. The DC further directed all concerned departments to work in close coordination and with a shared sense of responsibility to protect the youth from the harmful effects of drugs and contribute towards realizing the vision of a drug-free Jammu and Kashmir.

On the occasion, the SSP Srinagar underlined the coordinated approach against narcotics-related activities with sustained commitment. During the meeting, the NCORD Committee was apprised of the sustained crackdown against narcotics, which has led to the registration of about 170 FIRs and the arrest of about 240 alleged drug peddlers, besides attachment and dismantling of illegal movable and immovable properties linked to drug traffickers as a part of the intensified action, while bank accounts have also been frozen pursuant to financial investigations.

The Committee was further informed that 103 driving licences, including 51 permanently, and 59 vehicle Registration Certificates (RCs) have been suspended for violations linked to narcotics-related activities.
