SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association on Sunday thanked Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu for his prompt and decisive intervention in addressing the harassment incident involving two Kashmiri shawl sellers in Kangra district. National Convenor of the Association, Nasir Khuehami, lauded the Chief Minister for ensuring the registration of FIR No. 86/24 under Sections 196(1) and 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act against the accused Block Development Council (BDC) member, despite the victims’ decision to forgive her.
He stated that this action reflects the Himachal Pradesh government’s zero-tolerance approach towards hate crimes and prejudice, sending a powerful message that communal harmony is non-negotiable. He also expressed gratitude to the Principal Media Advisor to the Chief Minister, Naresh Chauhan, for his consistent communication and assurance that Kashmiri students, labourers, and traders in the state will be safeguarded. This firm stance reflects the government’s unwavering commitment to maintaining an atmosphere of inclusivity and equality in the state.
Khuehami further appreciated the proactive role of the Himachal Pradesh Police, especially DGP Dr. Atul Verma and SP Kangra Shalini Agnihotri, for their swift action and efficient handling of the case. He emphasized that their dedication not only upholds justice but also restores the faith of minority communities in the state’s law enforcement system. Khuehami added that such measures restore faith among Kashmiri and minority communities, ensuring their safety and dignity are upheld. “Communal harmony is fragile, and incidents like this can have far-reaching consequences.
We urge authorities across states to adopt a zero-tolerance policy against hate-based actions,” he said. He further emphasized, “This incident is a stark reminder of the challenges faced by marginalized and minority communities. The Himachal Pradesh government’s decisive action in this matter sets a precedent for other states to follow. It sends a clear message that any form of discrimination, hate, or harassment will be met with strict action, ensuring the safety and dignity of all citizens.”
